I D News, Gossip, Comment1 riCKin rears F r..- i flWIfll VMIII II 11110 By SID HOLLINGSWORTH The story of the Oregon Trail and the settlement of the Oregon country is an illuminating chap ter of American history. Much has been accomplished in the Northwest since the .battle cry of "fifty-four forty or fight" in a war that was never fought having been compromised and adjusted in a boundary which has not been violated irt more than a century of peace between neighbors. As a youth this writer came to the northwest with the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey and crossed that boundary in north ern Idaho and Washington to join the line of levels with Canada. At that time when the rumb lings of world war were first being heard, the peaceful ways of life of the communities were notworthy. Trouble with "wob blies" and itinerants made it ev en difficult for rough looking characters like surveyors to come to town. That was, of course, before the arrival of motor cars and surfaced highways. And looking back today it would seem that no other development of the age has transformed the people in their respective ways of life more than the- automobile. It makes travelers of everybody so that all of the people are in truders and visitors part of the time. The change in transport ation means has brought about a real crisis with the familiar setting of the past. It is with something close to sadness that we who have wat- ched these changes in the times find the transition affecting the conveniences in and out of Med ford by the conversion of the rail line first to a branch, and then to curtailment of pass enger service altogether. And with heavy duty trucks and bus ses utilizing the highways it is significant to observe the means used by the state to check the weight of such vehicles. There Is such a checking station at the entrance to the Camp White Domiciliary which is kept busy with the logging trucks that stream along the highway. The point of this review is to call to mind the picture in the days before the wars of this century began. In those days the S.P. hauled a string of cars ov er Siskiyou Pass by two engines. They crept along very slowly and people using the dirt high-1 way, which was just as tortuous . and tedious, could make faster time than the train. Another route over the mountains even then could be seen as inevitable. In this highway trip, there were hazards like, falline trees whirh rtirl nnt affor-t tho road. Some of the roads j were improved m those days ana it is recalled that Oregon Highways were protected and improved by blackened plank ing laid across the surface at a 45 degree a.ngle which permit ted a fair degree of speed. Todav. from a transnnrtatinn standpoint, we are becoming dus and automobile conscious, and partly air conscious. Every day and Sunday. CamD White is serviced by a bus, with four round trips. The government provides busses to brine enter tainers out and to tafee members on occasion to Medforrl hall games and special functions, and a bus is provided for the week ly fishing trip as well as other trips. Personnel and members have : their own cars and about 300 are parked in the spaces reserv ed for them around the station . The American Red. Cross each summer conducts tours through out the Rogue River Valley in station waaons driven bv memh. ers of the motor corps. These are familiar launts to historic and interesting spots that are weu enjoyed. Greyhound and Trailways , ousses now are depended upon to carry the veterans tn anrl from the Domicliary when they ' go on iuriougn if they are not iortunate enough to own a car.
