Festival Footnotes The recent heat wave has caused many of the cast mem bers to shed most of their cloth ing for rehearsals, and brightly colored shirts and shorts have been the predominant costume for afternoon rehearsals. Direc tor Phil Hanson, who will ap pear as Dogberry in "Much Ado About Nothing," wore a pair of gaudy red and white shorts the other day, and Mike Onofrio, portraying Gonzalo in "The Tempest," wore a gay marigold behind one ear as an accessory to his tan shorts. The .thundershower which pelted Ashland late Friday af ternoon was welcomed with cries of joy by actors in "The Tempest" who had been rehears ing since two that afternoon. Several of them, remembering the movie "Singing in the Rain," shown recently at the Varsity theater in Ashland, did an impromptu take-off on Gene Kelly's dance to the title tune on the forestage, which was ex posed to the rain. Pat Hines did an imitation of Al Jolson sing ing "April Showers," and Marge Lovberg and. Paul Reinhardt danced a can-can while the rest of the cast sang. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond B. Curtis (nee Barbara Huggins), who will be remembered for their outstanding performances in last year's festival and both easons of the Vining Repertory, visited the theater last week on their way to Klamath Falls to play a nightclub engagement. They returned to Ashland later In the week, telling festival friends that they would leave soon for Texas. Barbara is a graduate of the University of Texas, and will work toward her masters degree next winter .f una will also attend classes at the university. Both hope to re turn to the festival next summer. One of the most active mem bers of the festival company is Bill Ball, of New Rochelle, N.Y., who in addition to acting in all four shows and directing several dancing, groups for the festival, is planning the program for the annual Bard's Heyday, to be held July 20 this year at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Berthold Barnum. The Madrigal singers, a group that includes several of the actors, will perform, and the country dancers who will dance on the green before play per formances are to demonstrate a pavanne, a galliard and a volta. Hans Lampl, music director, will direct the singers and will also speak on Elizabethan mu sic. Allen Fletcher will speak in formally on the four plays to be given this season. As all of the cast consult the backstage bulletin board every day for notices of parties, spe cial rehearsals and picture-taking schedules, they have also started to watch for the latest in a series of "tintypes" which someone in the company has , Glimpses of Oregon's Shakespearean Festival been tacking up. They have ap propriate captions in the style of Constance Bannister's baby pictures and Clare Barnes, Jr.'s "Home Sweet Zoo" and "White Collar Zoo." According to box-office work ers, ticket sales in Portland, Salem, Eugene and Klamath Falls are ahead of those in Med ford and Ashland with less than three weeks until opening night. Executive Secretary Bill Daw kins is hopeful, however, ' that sale of memberships will im prove since they are now on sale at both Purucker's and Pruitt's music stores in Medford. R.S.
