MedfordCSSwtmbunk . Beavers Figured Out Of Race for Pennant1 San Francisco U.E) Five Pa cific Coast league teams Friday claimed a good chance to win the 1952 pennant. Only Port land, Sacramento and San Fran cisco appeared to be out of the race,, as it moved toward the end of its 15th week. The three tail end clubs, from lite to 17'i games back of the chase, are the only ones in the PCL this season not using optioned players. Next year, un less the league relents, no PCL Jeam will be permitted to" use an optioned player. Because the Beavers, Solons and Seals are starting a season early to "develop young talent," the bad news of 1952 may prove good news during 1953. Their clubs, next year, will have had a season's experience in operat ing optionee-less. Having Fun But meanwhile, the five teams welcoming optioned players are having funl Fifth place Los An geles, farthest away from first of the quintet, is only 6Vz games back. Time trials are scheduled for 7 o'clock. First race is billed for 7:45 p.m. Events will include four heat races, a final heat, a trophy dash, a special race, a consolation run, a B main event and a main tangle. California Drivers Most drivers will be from northern California. The race program is promoted here by the California Stock Car association of which Gerald M. Piper is director. Piper reported that a small track such as the posse has is preferred for the slam-bang type of racing of the hardtops. Mis haps that occur at the greater speeds on longer tracks are more damaging to the cars, he pointed out, also remarking that great speed is not a primary requisite of hardtop racing. There are still plenty of speed, spills and thrills on a short track. "Roll-Over" Bars Cars entered must meet cer tain specifications in construe-, tion; Only models between 1936 and 1942 vintage are permitted. They can be coupes or sedans but must have hard turret tops and "roll-over" bars which arch over the drivers. Bucket seats and safety belts are required as are crash helmets and goggles. No glass is permitted in - the auto. ' High compression heads and ground cams are the only, ex tras permissable to boost the performances of the cars. Races are planned each Friday night at the posse grounds. It is hoped to get a large number bf local racers on the weekly programs. The Calif ornia association has 1,100 mem bers and 450 cars. By UNITED PRESS Eddie Stanky still has a long way to go to win a pennant in his rookie year as Cardinal man ager, but his ace pitcher Gerry Staley was a good bet Friday to win him a bet from his old boss, Leo Durocher. Before the season started Stanky bet Durocher a hat that Staley , would win more games than any of the three Giant aces, Sal Maglie, Larry Jansen, or Jim Hearn. Thursday night Staley won his 12th game, 10 to 3, over the Phillies, as the Cardinals extended their winning streak to 10, longest in the majors this year. Staley thus became the number one winner in the league. . , Team Gains The Cardinals, now in third place, eight games behind the leading Dodgers and 3te behind the runner-up Giants, gained on both teams. The Cubs topped Brooklyn, 7 to 6, and the Pirates upset, the Giants, 6 to" 4, in 12 innings on Gus Bell's two-run homer. The Reds topped the Braves, 5 to 3. In the American League the White Sox moved to within 2te games of the leading Yankees by winning 2 to 0 and 4 to 2 de cisions at Washington.
