V JOVIAL Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower appears to be in a-jovial mood as he offers hi9 hand to a guest i during a reception in his honor in Chicago. Presenting the guest is Senator Henry Cabot Lodge (center), ! Eisenhower's campaign manager. . . - 'Preacher Absconds With Prisoner's Fine Columbus, Miss. U.R) A man representing himself as a preacher entered the county jail in the name of religion and knelt for an hour's prayer .with a prisoner charged with drunk enness. Several who watched were so moved by the preacher's zeal that they made donations to ward the drunk's fines. The "preacher" left with $5 to make arrangements for his convert's release. That was the last time he was een. "I'm going to give', that preacher plenty of what he was trying to save me from," the jailed man declared, "if I ever catch up with him.". Strength of Wales Beer Subject of Controversy 'Fresh water clams spend the first part of their lives as para sites of fishes. '. Sydney. Australia U.R) The I strength of a glass of New South Wales beer, which hundreds of thousands of war-time American troops still fondly recall, is a sub ject of controversy because it has been increased by law. Church and temperance groups and the Sunday newspaper Truth are protesting a recent act of the New South Wales parli ment which sets a mandatory minimum strength of 7.3 per cent alcohol for all beer brewed in the state. Previously, a minimum of two per cent was permissible. The legislation does not affect beers equally popular with war-time Anfericans which were brewed in Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane and elsewhere. tAONTREAl. "HECKf I DIDN'T KNOW THE MADE (RON INS BOARDS 'OUTTA STEEL" Opponents of the law com plained that it threatened to turn the beer-loving Aussies into a race of drunken sots. Government Replies The government replied "x that its legislation was merely a crackdown on the watering of beer by publicans. The newspaper Truth didn't agree that the new regulations were for the sole purpose of ..pre venting watering. "What the government has done, in facf, is to foster the growth of a nation of pub crawl ers, and to prevent any move to market a lighter beer," Truth said. Truth went on: "In the opin ion of this newspaper, the gov ernment has made a grave mis take in approving the amend ment which perpetuates this state's reputation of producing one of the strongest beers in the world. "It has now been made impos sible for the breweries to meet a growing public demand for lighter beer. Like Their Beer "Reduced alcoholic content is more important in beer than in spirits since Australians, for cli matic and economic-reasons, are a nation of beer drinkers. "During 1949-50, Australian beer ' production' totalled 154, 188,627 gallons an average of nearly 20 gallons for every man, woman and child in the community. If only one-third of the population drank beer, aver age consumption was nearly 60 gallons a head. "Obviously, a large percent age of Australian beer drinkers drink solely for relaxation and refreshment and would welcome a lighter beer, which' would not have such an evil effect on their physical and moral senses. Others Agree "The vicious minority, who drink to excess, until their senses are dulled and their pock ets empty, need to be protected as far as possible from their crav ingfor their own good, and for the good of the community." Quick to-Tally to the side of Truth in the "War" came clergy men and leaders of women's temperance associations. "I think the new regulations are a tragedy," said the Bishop of Armidale, the Rt. Rev. J. S Moyes. , "Overseas servicemen told me during the war that they found Australian beer very strong and that it had drastic effects," he said. POP QUELLS FIRE Elizabethtown, 111. The interior of the initial fire ball formed in an atomic bomb blast has a temperature of many millions of degrees and is very nearly a vacuum. Credits All-Bran With Constipation Relief!
