    American Embassy
Forced to Change
Homes in Moscow
Moscow OJ.P.)- The U. S. em
bassy has got to give up its
building just across the street
from the Kremlin.
The embassy disclosed Mon
day night that the Soviet govern
ment had notified it that' the
$62,500-a-year lease on "the em
bassy building would expire
Dec. 31 and would not be re
newed. The building, like all
municipal real estate, is owned
by the Moscow Soviet
leaking New Building
The "office for serving the
diplomatic corps," a branch of
the Soviet Foreign Ministry, said
in the same letter of notification
that it was searching for another
building to serve as the Amerk
can embassy.
It said the present building on
Mokhovaya street would be
taken over by the Moscow Uni
versity, which already occupies
an adjacent building.
The U. S. embassy will lose
one of the choicest locations in
Moscow. Its balconies and roof
tops offer excellent views of the
traditional parades and demon
strations in Red Square, which
goes diagonally across the street.
An embassy spokesman said
no alternative building yet has
been offered.

GOP Convention Sidelights
Include Salute for General,
Broken Seals, Poll of Votes
Chicago - (U.R) Sidelights
of the GOP Convention:
Gen. Douglas MacArthur got
something new in the way of
military salutes as he left Con
vention Hall after his keynote
speech Monday night.
About 40 uniformed Chicago
policemen flanked the exit
through which MacArthur pass
ed en route to his waiting limou
sine. Present Arms
As the general reached the
exit a police sergeant barked:
"Present arms."
The policemen dutifully held
up their night sticks.
The Republicans are taking
extra precautions against cate
crashers after discovering that
someone had broken the paper
seals pasted across the exit doors
at Convention Hall Monday.
Doors Sealed
The seals enabled patrolling
ushers to tell at a glance whether
anyone inside the hall was ad
mitting unauthorized persons
through the exit doors. Head
usher Andy Frain replaced the
seals and hired 30 more ushers.
The Puerto Rican delegation
to the Republican Convention
drew a big laugh during the roll
call vote on delegate contest
rules. When the roll reached
Puerto Rico, one member of the
delegation demanded an indi
vidual poll of his delegation.
Get Big Laugh
Conventioneers from such big
states as lew - York, with 96
delegates, and California with
70, roared with laughter.
Puerto has three delegates.
