UebfordU3&Tiubuiis YMCA Softballers Thump Lions; Mobilgas Cracks National Guard YMCA remained the lone un beaten nine in the Medford Soft ball association men's league by thumping the Crater Lions 13 to 5 Thursday night and Mobilgas moved into sole hold on second spot in the standings by blasting National Guard 10 to 2.. Both were five inning games, halted at that stage because of the adequate leads of the vic tors. YMCA, lagging 5 to 2 when it came to bat in the fifth, piled up 11 runs in the canto to gain the decision. L scored first in the hassle with two runs in the in itial chukker on singles by Wil lard Barnum, Don Byers and Ralph Brock, a walk, a hit bat ter and two fielder's options. The Lions knotted the game 2 to 2 in the second on two walks, Bessonette's triple and Hunter Dixon's single. Lions Take Lead In the fourth the Lions got their three-run advantage in bingles by. Bill Wall and Win Carl, two errors, a hit batter, a walk and a wilir pitch.. Y utilized seven hits, four er rors, two fielders' options and a walk to pile up its 11 counts in the fifth. Barnum and Byers both doubled and Lyle Heidermann tripled. Mobilgas, grabbing its third win against one loss, got a six run jump in the second inning. Doubles by Bill Werner and Con nie Holzgang, four errors and three walks contributed. Guardsmen Tally National Guard picked up two runs in ' the second frame on four hits, one a double by Dick Phillips, an error and two wild pitches. In the fourth- the Gasmen widened to 9 to 2 on three runs on hits by George Sendelbach and Ron Stagier, two walks, three errors and a passed ball. . Mobilgas ' went into the last half of the fifth inning needing but one run for an eight-marker margin that would give it the ball game. Connie Holzgang got to first, base on an error, took second on another and third fin a wild pitch. Carl Reich and John Darland both walked and Sendelbach fanned for the first out. Don Wendt then knocked a line fly to deep left "field and Holzgang crossed with the win ning run. Wendt's rap got through Bob Rickman's glove in the field, but had Rickman hauled the ball in, Holzgang would have scored easily after the catch. The Mercy Flights twin-engine Cessna air ambulance, piloted by John Childers, left here early today to take a patient to Van couver, B.- C.,' where she will undergo radio-therapy at a hos pital there. The patient was to be picked up at the Eugene airport, and was to be accompanied on the trip by her husband and sister. Childers expected to be back by this evening. The Stinson air ambulance also operated by the non-profit corporation remained at the Med ford field for use in any emer gency cases which might arise. July 4. 1952 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE FIVE Many Bonus Checks Returned for Lack Of Address Change Salem U.R) Many bonus checks are being returned to the bonus division because the pay ees failed to report their change of address after applying, the State Department of Veterans Affairs said Friday. Hub Saalfeld, head of the bonus division, said the depart ments has been able to locate and pay some of these applicants whose addresses were changed. He said: "In spite of this search we still have more than 70 bonus payments on hand which were returned by the post of fice because the payees failed to notify either the postmaster or the bonus division of their changes of address." All veterans who moved after applying for a bonus were re minded to notify the bonus divi sion, State Veterans department, Salem, of their current where abouts, giving their old and new addresses. Next of kin of men who died in service or after discharge were also reminded that they are entitled to the bonus, if the vet eran was an Oregonian for one year before entering active serv ice. Survivors entitled, in pro ority, are the unremarried wid ow, the child or children, or the parent or parents. Rogue River Areas To Be Opened to Public Portland U.R) Oregon State Game Director P. W. Schneider Friday announced that 44 points along the Rogue river between Gold Beach and Prospect, 150 miles upstream, would be open ed to the public. The access sites will consist of tracts of river frontage con taining from one to 100 acres with space for roads, bank fish ing, boat ramps and parking areas, Schneider said. Of the 44 sites approved for development, 1 8 will be for bank fishing; eight will be used for boat launchings and 18 will be for both bank and boat fishing.
