TWO MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Thuriday. July 3, 19521 MedfordTribuni Bob Mathias Qualifies, Sets Record Tulare, Calif. U.PJ Bob Mathias, the "world's greatest athlete," left for Helsinki Thurs day with a chance to become the first man in history to win the Olympic decathlon champ ionship twice. Mathias won his fourth U.S. crown in the decathlon Olympic .trials here Wednesday night and. set a new world record in doing it. ' The brilliant Stanford univer sity star, competing in his home town, beat out a field of 26 of the nation's top athletes and ended up with a staggering 7,825 point total. This bettered his own previous decathlon mark of 7,444 points. It took Mathias only nine ev ents to pass the old total point record as he improved on his previous decathlon marks in eight out of 10 individual ev ents. Prepfier Stars Despite Mathias' outstanding performances, he had to share honors with 18-year-old high school junior Milton Campbell from Plaiftfield, N. J., who grab bed a spot on the three - man Olympic team by finishing in second place with 7,055 points. Only six men in history have bettered Campbell's record and the teen-ager's showing made him the only high school student on the U.S. track and field team for the 1952 Olympics. In third place, with 6,804 points, was Floyd Simmons of North Carolina who nosed out Bill Albans of New Jersey in a dramatic bed for the third de cathlon berth. Women's Golf Activities There were 17 junior high and senior high school girls Jn the : group lessons on June 30, at the Rogue Valley Country club. Following instruction, a three hole spec tournament was held. In the senior high group Betty Hawkins and Carole Pringle . were winners. In the junior high group Mira Frohnmayer placed first, and there was a tie for sec ond between Diana Getchell and vJeanine Teeter. Members of the women's 'or- ,'ganization supervising the play were Mrs. Charles Barnes, Mrs. Roger Clark, Mrs. H. E. Nulton, Mrs. Harvey Robertson and Mrs. Robert Shepherd. The last group lesson will be given on Monday, July 1, at 9 a.m. for both groups. This will be followed by a tournament. Luncheon will be served for the group at the home of Mrs. L. W. Bates, 19 S. Barneburg road. Prizes won during the month will be awarded after the luncheon. All junior and senior high girls who have participat ed in the group lessons are invited. Vern Sterling Duck Line Coach Eugene (U.R) Athletic Director Leo Harris said Thurs day Vern Sterling, ex-all-American guard at Santa Clara uni versity, has been named line coach at the University of Ore gon. Sterling replaces Gene Har low who accepted a similar po sition at Tulane. Sterling has been an assistant coach at Sequoia high school in Redwood City, Calif. Vancouver 4' Studs Slate California Holiday Trip The Medford Cheney Studs will play twice during the holi day week-end. They wil tangle with the Cres cent City, Calif., baseball nine at Crescent City on Friday and Saturday. Games both days will be at 2 p. m. (DST). Only a small Stud squad will make the jaunt, Business Manager Bill Askwith reported. Paul Gehr man will pitch one game. Crescent City is a member of the Humboldt County league. The Southwestern Oregon cir cuit, of which Medford is a mem ber, will have no loop action this week. Play in the circuit, opening the second half of the season, will commence July 12. All frays of the first half have been completed with the excep tion of the Drain-Roseburg se ries set for last week-end. The two games will be made up at midweek dates during the second half. ' ' Medford will resume its Saw dust league action at Drain on July 12 and 13. Two games with traveling teams are planned here this month. The Studs oppose the house of David on July 15 and the Havana Cubans on July 18. On July 19 and 20 the Cheney crew has -games at Roseburg. The first Sawdust league series1 in Medford during the-second half will be on July- 26 and 27, when the Studs entertain ' Co quille. , v Auto Races; On Holiday Auto racing will highlight tha holiday here on Friday. . Midget car races are sched uled for tha sheriff ' poise grounds on Sage road at the west edge of Medford. Slock car competilign is set for the Medford speedway near tha airport. The midgets will commence time trials at 3 p. m. 'Ninety laps or racing will follow. An entry of 18 cars is anticipated with drivers from Medford and Grants Pass. Midget cars will compete here for the first time in many years. Cars of the Southern Ore gon Midget Racing association will participate. The stock car event may : have as high as 30 autos with drivers from Medford, Ash land and Grants Pass. Time trials will get under way about 12:30 p. m. with races to begin at 1 or 1:30 p. m. Yanks Sign Bob Martyn Portland (UP) Bob Martyn, former Linf ield college baseball star, packed his bags Thursday and headed for Boise where he will play in the Pioneer league after signing a contract with the New York Yankees. Martyn, an outfielder, was signed by Syl Johnson of Gresh am, Ore., New York resident scout. No terms were disclosed but Johnson said Martyn was signed for a "small' bonus. American Legion Juniors To Play Two games at Prineville are billed this week-end for th$ Medford American Legion jun-; ior baseball nine,. The tussles are set for Satur day night and Sunday noon. Shake-up Likely To Result From Vancouver Row By UNITED PRESS A top-brass dispute which has simmered since early May has broken into the open in the Van couver Capilanos' tepee, and re ports indicate a shakeup will take place in the Western Inter national league club. General Manager Bob Brown expressed dissatisfaction with the managing of Bill Schuster after the Caps lost a double header to Yakima Tuesday. Schuster said he should return to action, but Brown said no. Brown claimed the team is Van couver's best since the war, but the players do not seem to be pulling together anr should be doing much better. Lose Five The skidding Canadians lost their fifth straight Wednesday night as the cellar-dwelling Yak ima club whipped them, 6-4. Victoria beat Wenatchee, 16 7, in the first game of a twin bill, but lost the windup, 5-1. In other games, Spokane nipped Salem, 6-5, and Tri-City topped Lewiston, 7-5. Wenatchee scored four runs in the third inning to take the second game. Chuck Abernathy's grand slam homer in the first in ning decided the first game. Spokane tied Salem with two runs in the ninth, then won it in the tenth when Jim Brown walke and eventually scored to Pat Simmon's outfield fly. Gavilan Changes Fighting Style Summit, N. J. (U.R) Walter-weight champion Kid Gavi lan will have two objectives when he faces young Gil Turn er in ' Philadelphia Monday night: (1) To Keep his title and (2) to prove he's the best all around fighter in the ring today. And he is changing his style to accomplish those purposes. For the first time in his nine year career Gavilan is sacrific ing speed ' for dynamite. For the first time he is "setting" to punch. Training here at Ehsan's Camp, the 26-year-old Cuban is not merely grooming for his third title defense. He is prepar ing to beat the undefeated Phila delphia youngster so impressive ly that the world will agree with trainer Mundito Medina in say ing: "There unquestionably is the world's best fighter now that Sugar I":ay Robinson has faded." Softball Frays Slated Tonight .YMCA will aim at keeping its unblemished status in the Med ford Softball association men's circuit when it battles the Crater Lions at 7:30 o'clock tonight at the seniar high stadium. . In the second game Mobilgas will scrap National Guard. The Y has played only one mix, defeating Eagle Point. It will be the third loop fracas for the Lions who bounced ' back from a 25 to 2 defeat at the hands of Central Point to top Trowbridge and Flynn 17 to 10. National Guard has not seen action in the circuit isnce early last month. Mobilgas is now tied for second place in loop stand ings with Camp White and Cen tral Point. FINISHES TERM Davis, Calif. Carl Reich, Medfdrd, has completed a year's term on the executive commit tee of the Associated Students of the California Aggies on the Davis campus of the University of California. Carl served as ath letics representative on the com mittee. Reich, a senior in general agriculture, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Reich, , Stewart ave nue, Medford. Southern Oregon Junior Baseball The Medford pee wees defeat ed Central Point 5 to 4 Wednes day in a nip and tuck Southern Oregon Junior Baseball league engagement. In other pee wee action Eagle Point whipped Jacksonville 7 to 2 and Ashland nudged Grants Pass 1 to 0. Grants Pass down ed Ashland 19 to 11 in a cub fray. (UP) The cream of the nation's women swimmers open three days of elimination Friday to determine the final 18 berths on the U. S Olympic Swim squad. Compe tition includes 100-meter free style, 100-meter back-stroke, 200-meter breast-stroke, 400 meter free-style, and three-meter springboard diving. The first three in. each event plus three more, of the swiftest qualifiers chosen for the 400-meter relay will represent Uncle Sam at the Olympiad in Helsinki.
