MEDFORD K-9 Corps Credited With Reducing Patrol Casualties With 7th Infantry in Korea (U.R) The Army's K-9 corps has been credited with reducing battle patrol casualties by 0 per cent in Korea. After experiments with the third squad of the 26th Infantry scout dog platoon, it was found that patrols can penetrate deep er and move faster with less risk of casualties when they are spear-headed by dogs. The canines, classified as sil ent scout dogs, are all German shepherds. Of eight dogs in the squad, six are scouts, one is a messenger dog and the other is still training. Each dog has a handler, all of whom are graduates of the Army's six-month dog training course at Fort Riley, Kans. The handlers must have an Army in telligence rating of at least 110. Freeze end Point The dogs are trained to indi cate soundlessly the presence of enemy soldiers. At the point of a combat patrol, the dogs ap proach their quarry downwind. They indicate human scents by either freezing or pointing their tails. ' Their handlers recount num erous stories of the does' oerceD-! tiveness during the average 12 weekly patrols. Cpl. Hazen Stipe of Mt. Pleas ant, la., tells how his dog. Flash, saved a patrol from possible an nihilation. "We were moving down a val ley when Flash gave the alert," Stipe said. "We didn't see any thing, so we went on. A little later Flash froze again. "A couple of scouts moved out and found that the enemy had set up an ambush. The Reds out numbered us, so we sat tight and called in artillery. Flash got a credit for that one." The German shepherds have had little trouble adapting them selves to the Korean climate. They have two coats of hair which keep them comfortable in sub-freezing temperatures.
