Trautman Blasts Women Players, 'Bonus Babies' Portland (U.R) Women In baseball and "bonus babies" re ceived a verbal blast Wednesday from baseball's Minor League Commissioner George M. Traut man, who is here on a tour of inspection of far western minor leagues. Trautman defended his ban on Mrs. Eleanor Engle, signed by a Harrisburg, Pa., baseball team as organized baseball's first "playerette." "I think the women should play by themselves," Trautman said. He said he made the : ruling "for the good of baseball." Trautman didn't soft pedal what he thinks about the cur rent "bonus baby" madness. "It's ridiculous and in a way terrible," he said. "It can't go on. It's bad for baseball and still wot'se for the boys themselves, though no one can blame them for snapping up 'the pot of gold' offers." He believed the problem will eventually solve itself because it's too expensive. Later this week, with Presi dent Bob Abel of the Western International league, Trautman plans to tour the Inland Empire and see games at Tri-City, Wen atchee and Spokane. 3,000 races. "I can't understand what ev erybody's so excited about,!' he said. It s just another win, "I'm going to keep right on riding, you know. But I'm get ting pretty old, and I don't know how much longer I'll go on. JUST LIKE THE GOOD OLD DAYS! GREAT STRAIGHT BOURBON. Chick Harbert, Jimmy Turnesa In PGA Finale Louisville, Ky. iil.P.) Burly Chick Harbert and squat Jimmy Turnesa met Wednesday for the PGA golf championship and for one of them it means final satisfaction after pluvious disap pointments. Harbert, the long distance hit ter from Northville, Mich., went to the finals in 1947 only to lose to big Jim Ferrier. Turnesa, the quiet little par busting automaton, had his chance 10 years ago and lost in that 1942 final to Slammin' Sammy Snead. One of them was going to make it today and for the other it will be disappointment all over again. No Predictions Neither of them made any predictions of victory, for both were veterans of the tournament trail who knew they faced a rough struggle. "You can't foretell these things," said the 39-year-old Turnesa after reaching the finals by beating Ted Kroll of New Hartford, N.Y., 4 and 2. The handsome 37-ycar-old Harbert was slightly more vol uble after his 2 and 1 win over Wednesday, June 25, lilt MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL THIBUKB RTCIf Scores Yesterday Tuesday's Results COAST I.KAGI E Sacramento - Portland (postponed, rain).
