(U.R) The hoopla and headlines center on Taft and Eisenhower but a third man is waiting quietly in the wings for a chance to step into the spotlight as the Republican party's presidential nominee. He is quiet, affable, 61-year- old Earl Warren, governor of California. Has 76 Votes He has 76 solid votes In his pocket to take with him to the Chicago nomination convention and he has a clear-cut plan-to sit tight and hope that neither Sen. Robert A. Taft nor Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower can mus ter the 604 votes needed to win the nomination. , If that happens, Warren hopes to be the man. His pre-conventlon strategy has been one of carefully avoid ing criticism of any ranking can didate. In his speeches, he never has mentioned either man by name and he has concentrated on explaining his own policies and beliefs. Won't Make Deal Warren's opponents claimed during the recent primary elec tion that the governor is not a serious presidential candidate, that he will trade his key bloc of convention votes in exchange for the promise of a cabinet post, a Supreme Court appointment! or perhaps the vice-presidential nomination again. The governor emphatically de- nies It and claims he has marie; "no deals with anyone and I will make none." No Plans to Visit Ike j Warren has had no correspond dence or talks with Eisenhower or his strategists since the gen eral's return from France. Al though his Chicago convention train will pass through Den ver Eisenhower's headquarters on its way to Chicago, Warren has no plans to stop over and talk to Ike. Likewise he has steered clear of the Taft crowd. His strategists hope his un waverlng down-t h e-middle course will make him an atlrac-1 Now!
