FX 1 FOUn MEDFOHD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Friday. June 20, 1932 Festival Director Plans Music for Coming Season Plans for music which will augment the four play of the 1952 Snakespearean festival season wore discussed In Medford yesterday by Hans Lampt, music director for the season. Mr. Lampl is on the music faculty of the University of Southern California. : The director is planning to train an a cappela chorus, a group of Madrigal singers, an or chestra and various small In strumental groups. It is intended that these various musical groups will not only provide ov ertures and musical background for the four plays, but plans also include a full-length concert of Eliiabethan period music on Au gust 29. Director Lampl outlined the program planned for the con cert, saying it would include sa cred music of the period, motets by Morley, anthems by Byrd and Gibbons and prayers origin ally written for Queen Eliza beth. The director observed that some of this music Is "very im pressive." Also on the program will be Elizabethan love songs, solos by vocalists, string music and danc es and fantasies played by a chamber orchestra. The pro gram will be concluded with ex cerpts ' from Purcell's "Fairy Queen," the director concluded. Director Lampl stated that he needs a chorus of at least 40 voices for the program, and is particularly anxious to enroll men singers. He stressed that anyone who wants to sing Is In vited to join the chorus, and that experience or the ability to read music is not necessary, although desirable. Auditions will be sim ple, he stated, and merely a mat ter of determining the range of voice in order to properly place the singer. The chorus will rehearse twice a week, he said, In Med ford on Monday evenings and in Ashland on Friday evenings. Di rector Lampl will interview and audition singers next Monday, June 23, between the hours of 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. at Lincoln school gymnasium. i Rehearsals for string instru ment players will be held Wed nesday and Saturday evenings. The Madrigal group will be made up of more experienced vocalists and will rehearse three times a week in Ashland during the afternoon. Because the time for rehearsal is short, Director Lampl stated that he is most anxious to form the groups and begin rehear sals at once. "I am sure there is much musical talent in the dis trict," he said, "and there is ev ery reason to believe that we can work up a chorus and other groups of which we can be proud, and which will be a def inite asset to the festival. "There will be only one per formance of the chorus, and it will be important. The small in strumental groups will perform from time to time for plays, and the schedule will be arranged In such a fashion that it will not be burdensome on any one group." The musician conferred yes terday with Mrs. Darell Huson, who is music chairman for Tu dor guild, auxiliary organiza tion of the festival. Mr. Lampl, educated in Europe and In this country, plays both the violin and piano and has done much conducting of both instrumental and vocal music. Lonergan was to rule Friday on whether a conversa tion between Mrs. Jada Z. If Stevenson balked at Chi cago, the Democrats would b faced with a confusing variety of choices. Only Sen. Estes Ke fauver among them has estab lished any claim to a national following. Mr. Truman is cold to Kefauver's candidacy, powerful organization figures are against him and the White House gang, itself, has thumbs down. Truman's Feelrhgs Shown No doubt of Mr. Truman's feelings toward Kefauver could survive Thursday's news confer ence when the President called the senator's presidential pri mary defeat here by W. Averell Harriman an endorsement of the administration's program. After Kefauver comes a pa rade of sectional or favorite son candidates. Barring only Vice President Alben W. Berkley, they can claim no more than good political connections in their own geographical areas. Barkley's great handicp is his 74 years. Any one of these might be nominated with the active sup port of Mr. Truman and those party leaders whose decisions and. delegates the President can control. Mr. Truman has laid It on the line, however, that the Democratic nominee and plat form must be 100 per cent for mm. tor his administration and all its works. Whole hog or no bacon are Mr. Truman's terms to the man who would succeed him. And, of course, he wants a winner. Says He's Through Mr. Truman says he is throueh and no doubt means It. Comparison of grades earned by four popular husband-wife student teams showed the man bettering the woman in two instances and the woman coming out on top in the other two family races. Dean S. Nichols, Medford, president of the student body, outstudled wife Anne, 3:40 to 3.37. And Sam Mansfield, Ash land, was smarter than wife Marie, 3.80 to 3.48. But Una Fowler outdid hus band Floyd 3.82 to 3.50 in an Ashland race while a Klamath Falls couple, Mr. and Mrs. Wil liam Lofdnhl, saw honors go to wife Betty 3.33 to 3.08. Male contestants claim ulti mate superiority since many work for a living while attend ing college and the woman counter with the age-old house work argument. Mrs. Nichols attempted to put a clincher on the argument of more work by giving birth to a 7 pound 7 ounce son Tuesday of this-wcek.
