The domination that Is most resented comes from tell ing the other what he or she can do with free time. That is the mistake the young wife who wrote the following letter is making: (Q) "Recently, my hus band's place of business form ed a bowling club, consisting of single girls, married men and women. My husband has been going once a week with the crowd for quite some time now. Lately, I have forbidden him to go as he tells me the men supply drinks for all the women. I feel that since he it married and the father of two children, he should go with mon only or accompanied by his wife. Have I done right In this matter?" (A) It is very foolish for a wifo t? "forbid" her husband to do anything. No human being likes to be dictated to, and that la what you have done. I'm sur prised he hns not exploded about your stand. Why should- jd& $ " t he go bowl A Inn with the people he works with? It is a very nice way to get to know them and this makes working con ditions pleas- There's no harm at nil in going with his office crowd, even if some of the women are single. If the drinking becomes hea vier than the bowling, and If the club turns into a drinking in stead of a bowling club, there would be reason for you to be concerned. Then, too, drinking can be pretty expensive unless FALSE TEETH Rock, Slide or Slip? rAHTtr.ru, an Imnrov.d powder to b. sprlnkltd nn upprr or lowrr pint., holds (! tvMh more flrmlv In plar. CaL LETS HAVE A So far as health and well be ing are concerned the effects of tea aa a beverage are virtually the same as the effects of coffee. Both are b e n e f i c i ent beverages for adults. Chil dren under six teen yean of age should have no coffee, no tea and, in my opinion, no cocoa. Dt. Brady The three beverages are stimu lants, the active principle or alkaloid in coffee being caf feine, in tea theine, in cocoa theo bromine. These alkaloids are dis tinguishable chemically but the physiological action of one is about the same as that of the others. Perhaps a cup of coffee contains more of the alkaloid than a cup of tea, and the cup of tea more than a cup of cocoa. What is a stimulant? Look out, now, a definition must exclude opium, laudanum, morphine, heroin, codeine, alcohol, cocaine and the barbiturates. These are all sedatives and depressants. A stimulant is "an agent that arouses organic activity . . . and promotes a sense of well being" (Dorland), or "an agent which produces a temporary increase of vital activity in the organism or any of its parts" (Webster). But Noah didn't leave it at that. Not he no doubt he liked a nip now and then for the second defini tion of the word Is "an alcoholic beverage." He had some quaint notions about "colds" too. Offhand I should say two or three cups of tea give a stimu' latlng effect equivalent to that of one cup of coffee. Excessive consumption of tea, medical authorities tell us, may cause nervousness, tremor, pal pitation, insomnia, headache and digestive disturbances, lust as does excessive coffee drinking Because the caffeine in tea or coffee is a cerebral and nerve stimulant, overdose or excessive consumption of cither beverage will unquestionably produce or aggravate "nervousness," palpi tation and Insomnia or restless ness. But we may fairly dispute the notion that the tea drinking 1 IN SAN FIAHC1SC0 J hotel roemi I IOW COST lUXUtY i g Chotlsagas comparison m Om Ovist Cojftfoftebta Ctntrol llion - 1 HOTEL COMMODORE I CIAI0 f SMITH. "HECK' I DIDN'T KNOW THEV MADS IA0NINS BOARDS OUTTA STEEL J" DISH OF TEA habit causes anemia, sallow com prexion, dried wrinkled skin, etc. In the light of newer knowl edge of nutrition we know that it is too great a narrowing of diet over the years that accounts for' these common signs which the! old timers attributed to the ex- cessive tea drinking. It would be a boon to the men tal and physical health of the people if these beneficial bev erages were universally used in stead of alcoholic beverages for refreshment. There is no impairment of Judgment and no dulling of the sense of responsibility and moral integrity when one gets a lift from a cup of tea or coffee. There Is no appreciable let down after the immediate ef- fects of the tea or coffee wear; off. Everything I say here about tea or coffee drinking applies to adults only. Children should not be permitted to drink tea or cof fee, at least not before they are sixteen years of age. If one likes mate, the South American or Paraguay tea, it is virtually the same as tea or cof fee in all respects, although weaker. If tea is permitted to stand a MOO-O-OS and MUSINGS Frank DeSouza, who was the first white baby born west of Crescent City, will throw in the first catfish at the Derby Sun day.
