SIXTEEN MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Tueiday, June 17. 1932 Kefauver, Harriman Conduct Campaign in Voteless Washington BY LYLE C. WILSON Wasliington (U.R) This is the day voteless Washingtonians are invited to shake hands with Estes and Nancy at one time or another in almost any part of town, and perhaps, get a hand shake from W. Averell Hard man, to boot. It is Democratic presidential orimary day. No rules, hardly and no holds barred. Sen. Estes Kefauver and his red-haired McKinley Climbers To Carry Atomic Nuclear Plates Anchorage, Alaska (U.R) The first of four parties plan ning to climb 20,269 foot ML McKinley and neighboring peaks in the mighty Alaska range made ready Tuesday to begin an "atomic mission" on North America's highest mountain. Lad by Portlander The four-man group was led by Army Capt. William Hackett, Portland, Ore., the only Ameri can who has climbed the high est peaks in North and South America and Africa. Other mountaineers from Fairbanks, Alaska, Harvard University and Mexico will head into the rug ged interior later. Hackett said his group car ried several nuclear plates coat ed with special emulsions to rec ord the effect of cosmic rays striking the earth. Will be Vaiuabl The cosmic impressions on the plates will be of "immense val ue" to America's nuclear scien tists, he said. He said the plates will be left on the mountain top for several days and then re turned to the New York univer sity physics department, which prepared them. In addition to Hackett, the group was composed of Robert Goodwin, 25, Salt Lake City, Utah; Ernest Bowman, 28, Lead ville, Colo.; and Robert Ander son, 23, Milwaukie, Ore, Deftd line on Classified AHi: S-30 p in. for following day; 10 a.m. Mon day; noon Saturday for Sunday a.m. missus as a team, Harriman on his own, have brought to Wash ington a presidential campaign with the fervor of the old time religion. Six DelegatH Prise Six Democratic National Con vention delegates are the prize Barring only Florida, there has not been a hotter Democratic primary contest this year. Har. riman's literature goes as far as it dares in calling him Presi dent Truman's favorite. Some administration men are out in the open for him. Kefauver and his wife Nancy plug the folksy, charm school campaign with the big smile. It has paid off for them so far. Goggle-eyed pedestrians sew Kefauver and his wife ride down Washington's "F" street Mon day, a sound truck in the lead. The pixie driver of a Dixie Belle gin truck fell in behind the two. car procession and refused to pass. Kefauver sat on the back seat of a convertible tossing cam paign outtons to sidewalkers. Cars Picked Up The second time around, some hours later, Kefauver still was smiling but he had shed his coat on the hottest day so far this year. The parade had picked up four Kefauver-for-President cars to comolete his procession in the rear and to ward off other volun teer truckers Newspaper ads announced the Kefauvers schedule for Tuesday "Vote! Meet Nancy and Estes.' They will appear at upward of 30 polling places to give voters a chance to "shake hands with the next president." That's what the ads said. Farori Chinese Aid Both candidates have been swinging through town on speak ing tours, Harriman making s play for the minority vote in Negro churches and the like. He told Chinese In Chinatown's Cathay restaurant that he fa vored more aid for Nationalist China. Kefauver's aggressive cam paign practically on the White House steps has frazzled some of the .Democratic old guard. They - are saying: "If Harry doesn't move soon, that young fellow from Tennessee will swipe the nomination." They plan an appeal to the president. .rir uruiDionm filVFS YOU MORt- Costs You Less-Everv Washday Bring Whirlpool "Turn-of-thc-Dial Washdays" into your home ... at no cost or obligation.
