Potato Prices Rise Sharply
But Lower Levels Expected
By UNITED PRESS
Potato prices, stripped of gov
ernment ceilings, rose sharply in
many cities Saturday, but mar
ket conditions and the American
housewife were expected to
force them back down again
next week.
Spud prices In neighborhood
groceries promptly spurted after
the price lid was lifted Thurs
day, but wholesalers immedi
ately began to throw more po
tatoes onto the market and the
black market seemed dead.
May Drop Lower
Prices may even drop below
the old Office of Price Stabiliza
tion ceilings, some market ana
lysts predicted.

First Four-Engined
U. I. Jet Bombers
Arrive in England
London U.R Europe's
first four-engincd Jet bombers,
of a wing of American-built.
B-45 Tornado bombers, began
arriving at Sculthorpe, England
U. S. airbase Saturday night.
The big jet bombing planes
will be assigned to the North
Atlantic Treaty organization to
strengthen West Europe's de
fenses agamst the threat of So
viet aggression.
Fourteen of the planes arrived
at the American base after a
mass, cross-Atlantic flight from
Langley field, Virginia. It was
the first mass ocean crossing by
the B-45s.
Attached to Jet Wing
The planes are attached to
the 47th light jet bombardment
wing, which will be attached to
NATO. They arrived in England
after stop-overs at Westover
field, Mass., and Rcklavik, Ice
land, enroute. An Air Force
spokesman said other planes of
the wing were scheduled to ar
rive later.
The wing will be based at
Sculthorpe, under the Third Air
Force command and will add
a "Sunday punch" to mounting
United States airpower in Eu
rope. The B-45 Tornado jets will
be able to carry larger bombs
and carry them further than
er said. "She won't let the price
of spuds rise too high." '
Another said he hoped "our
customers won't buy'iat the new
high prices.
At San Francisco potatoes
were $8 per hundredweight,
with some batches going for as
.high as $7, was the most com-
mon wholesale price for spuds
Influx Seen Monday
Buyers thought that the price
would slip Monday when a great
influx of potatoes hit the market.
They pointed out that much of
the crop is of the thin-skinned
variety which will turn green
quickly If not moved.
Executive Secretary Charles
H. Bromann of the Associated
Food Dealers of Greater Chicago
said terminal market experts
were "very optimistic that prices
will fall below the old ceiling
levels as soon as the crop comes
in."
"The black market is broken
as of today," Bromann said.
"There's just no incentive for
the crooks without ceilings and
with supplies increasing."

Wanton Destruction of Property
Brings Warning by State Police
State police issued a warning
yesterday afternoon that any
youths caught on the Nash prop
erty, south of the Girl Scout Day
camp on Bear creek, and oper
ating or damaging the equip
ment there will be arrested and
fined for the damage involved.
Police said that several hund
red dollars worth of damage has
already been done by the firing
of .22 caliber rifles into the
heavy equipment such as tread
tractors, shovels, and the like
at the gravel pit on the property.
They stated that they were go
ing to "crack-down" on the. vio
lators because of the "needless
and wanton" damage which is
quite extensive. -
Besides the damage to private
property, police said that the
youths were subjecting them
selves to injury by operating
the heavy equipment and "jam
ming" around the property. One
youth was found running a scoop

The upturn followed the Su

government seizure of the steel

down railroad operations, reduc

to halt automobile production.
Wall Street anticipated a short
