DUNHAM'S 1951 N. PACIFIC HWY. MEDFORD, OREGON Jersey Joe Victor Over Ez Charles By JACK CUDDY Philadelphia (U.R) Jersey Joe Waleott the ring's pray ing, punching 38-year-old "mir acle man" will be able to risk his heavyweight crown again In September because his show manship and his fighting heart enabled him to win an upset tin animous decision over younger fczzard Charles. Snorting blood through his nose like an irate bull in the late sessions, Waleott not only cap tivated most of the 21,599 fans Thursday night in Municipal Stadium, but he also captured the votes of the three ring offi cials in his first defense of the crown. Had 30-year-old Charles been more aggressive and more show ily savage, he might have be come the first ex-champ in ring history to recapture the heavy weight crown. But he let the father of six children "take the play away from him." Wrltors Pick Charlts A majority of 38 boxing writ ers polled at the ringside thought Charles had won the fourth meeting of the two Ne groes. Twenty-one favored Ez zard; 17 picked Waleott. The temper of the ring offi cials was indicated by Judge Buck McTiernan of Pittsburgh, who said, "You can't take a man's title away on such a close fight as that." He said it as he handed his score sheet to the announcer. McTiernan favored Waleott eight rounds to . seven. Judge Pete Tomasco of Philadelphia also scored it very close for the champion, 7-6-2. Zack Clayton, Philadelphia, the first Negro ev er to referee a heavyweight title fight, had Waleott ahead, 9-6. Clayton warned Charles six times during the bout for low blows but he took away no rounds. The United Press favored Charles, 9-3-1. Deeply Disappointed Charles, the 11-5 favorite, was deeply disappointed; but he did not criticize the officials. He said, "I thought I had won, but they didn't vote for me. So I have no alibis." It was a good fight, and It pro duced the second largest gross receipts in Philadelphia's ring history a gate of $210,313 and a television-radio fee of $175,- 000. Each fighter, getting 30 per cent of the net proceeds, should receive about $100,000, Only the first Jack Dempsey- Gene Tunney bout, fought in the same stadium 26 years ago, pro duced greater receipts much greater $1,893,733. Terrific Pace Early rounds were fought at such a terrific pace that It seem ed some one would be knocked out before the half-way mark Stocky, bull-shouldered Waleott was clearly superior in the first half of the fight. He made a game stand in the later stages, Must Have Permit Salem (U.R) The State De partment of Agriculture said it has been advised by California officials that no bulk shipment of pears will be accepted in Cali fornia from Oregon unless they are accompanied by an official certificate from the department. The certificate shows the fruit has been washed or wiped or fu migated under one of four me thyl bromide schedules recog nized in California. To Protect From Bug The officials said this is a move to protect California from ! pear psylla, considered distrib uted generally over the Oregon pear and apple producing areas. Apples are subject to the same restrictions. This requirement by Cali fornia applies to car or truck lots of pears or apples shipped loose to processing plants. It does not apply to pears or apples mov ing in commercially packed containers. His performance had been so ap pealing that he was given a grand ovation when the decision was announced. Waleott, 196V4 pounds, who knocked out Ezzard' in Pitts burgh last July, let his lighter rival force the fighting in most of the rounds. But Charles was so sluggish at 191V4, the heaviest of his ca reer, that his forcing was slight ly less than thrilling In some ses sions. Walcott's smashing right hand and left-hook counters took the play. No Knockdowns There were no knockdowns during the bout, but it seemed in the third that Ezzard might go down. Ezzard suffered the wounds, He was gashed in both brows and had a cut under his right eye. He had mouses above each cheek. Jersey Joe was practic ally unmarked. Manager Felix Bocchlcchlo said Waleott was willing to de fend his title in September against the winner of the pro posed match between Harry Kid Matthews and Rocky Marciano. After the September bout, Jer sey Joe will go on a world tour.
