The managers save their answers Wednesday Red Rolfe of .the Tigers said he was after speed and some home run punch in the infield Lou Boudreau of the Red Sox said he wanted a top third base man and reserve strength. The Tigers got Fred Hatfield, Johnny Pesky, Walt Dropo, Dutch Lenhardt and Bill Wight In return they gave up George Kell, Hoot Evers, Johnny Lipon and Dizzy Trout. Player by Player Why? (U.R) Betsy Rawls, Austin, Tex., suc ceeded Babe Didrikson Zaharias Wednesday as the Weathervane cross-country golf tournament's champion with a record-breaking performance worth $5,000. Miss Rawls, clipping 11 strok es off the record previously shared by Mrs. Zaharias and Patty Berg, finished the 144 hole grind with a score of 590. Auto Race Site Sought Two local men last night made application to the city council for a lease on property at the municipal airport to be used for a one-half mile track for automobile races. They are E. H. Claassen, College way, and Ray Reid, 17 North Groveland avenue. The property requested by the two men adjoins a golf driv ing range now being operated on Biddle road. Reid outlined plans including setting up of portable stands. Races would include stock cars, hardtops and midgets and would be held on Sunday afternoons. The pair offered $100 a month on a four month lease. The council apparently view ed the request favorably but no action was taken at last night's meeting. Medford Cheney Studs will meet the Brookings Beav ers ' in a Southwestern Oregon league baseball contest Saturday night and Sunday afternoon In a series at the fairgrounds ball park here. The Beavers are managed by Ed (Whitey) Matson, former pro and veteran semi-pro player. Whitey is known as the Leo Dur ocher (old style) of the South western circuit as he is out to win every game and hotly con tests any questionable decisions of the umpires. Brookings Is sponsored by Pete Lesmeister, many years with the Klamath Falls Peli cans. The Beavers have a young club with long ball hitters in Frank Burdell and Bill Darnell Manager Hoosier Hoffard of the Studs will throw his ace hurlers, Derald Wooton and Paul Gehrman, at the Beavers. The Studs will have Pete Bianchl, a new infielder, with considerable baseball experience, he having played in the Western Interna tional loop and the Coast league for several seasons. The Studs have experienced considerable difficulty in get ting started this season both In their fielding and hitting but this week Hoffard hopes to find the Studs rounding into good playing condition and out to take both games of the series, This week the Studs added a home game to their schedule when they billed the Dunsmuir club of the Northern California league for Wednesday, June 18, The Dunsmuir club is at present one of the leaders in its own cir cuit.
