TEN MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Wednesday, June 4, 1952 Northwest Resident Of 9,000 Years Ago Said Clever Fellow Spokane (U.R) The man who lived In the Pacific Northwest 9.000 yea? atfo wai a clever fel low, and he probably wai the first to live In the Western hemis phere. But nobody knows what ihe looked like. ' Dr. L. S. Cressman, head of the anthropology department at the University of Oregon, says the oldest accurately dated things made by man In the Western hemisphere were found in me Northwest. No Skeletal Remains But so far, no skeletal remains have been uncovered to help sci entists recreate his physical ap pearance. Dr. Cressman headed an ex ploration of a cave near Fort Rock, Ore., In 1938 and found sandals, basketry, bone tools and weapons made by man more than 7,000 years before Christ was born. Tiller Carnival Set for June 7 Tiller A real Paul Bunyan will preside Saturday, June 7, at the Tiller-Drew school Paul Bunyan day festival and carni val at TUler, those in charge said today. The all-day event win benefit the recreation fund of the school, Loggers and timber men from throughout the state will compete in log sawing con tests, tugs of war and other games. A gay midway of carni val booths and square dancing will also be attractions. Cafeteria meals will be serv ed. Various organizations of the vicinity which are participating ' Include the Boy scouts, Drew Community club and 4-H club. Whisker Prises Men of the vicinity will be warded prizes for whisker ad ornmenta which they have grown in anticipation of the ev ent. A carnival queen will be se lected from the grammar school. Committeemen in charge of the carnival are Mr. and Mrs. Stuart Williams, Mr. and Mrs. Lance Brown, C. J. Porter, Wright Mallery, Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Corbett, Mr, and Mrs. Wes ton Scott, Mr. and Mrs. Larry Byrd, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Price, Mr. and Mrs. Milton Andrews, George Aker, Louis Elliott, Roy Jackson, Mrs. Nellie Thomaaon, Kenneth Bell,. Oliver Blgelow, M. Kenney, Mrs. William How ell and Mr. and Mrs. Larry Foster. i "Surprisingly, the basketry was far better than anything else of that period found in other parts of the world, ' he says. Dr. Cressman says the Fort Rock man evidently crossed the Columbia river and drifted north ward through Washington and British Columbia. Ancestors of Indians "The men who developed this culture were ancestors of our modern Indians," he says. "They probably come from Asia 20.000 years ago. But we won't know what they looked like until skel etal remains are found." He points out there may have been men in other parts of the western hemisphere earlier than 7,000 B. C. "But the things made in Ore gon are the oldest yet found," he says. "They predate the things made by the ancestors of the Iiichs and Indiana of southwest ern United States." Children Invited To Tiller Camp Tiller A week's summer eamp will open June 23 under direction of Arthur K.elatrup for the American Sunday school un ion at the Roseburg Camp Fire Girls camp on the Umpqua riv er, it was announced today. Sev eral well-known speakers will attend and both children and grownups are invited. Children, however, must be 11 years of age or over to be enrolled at the camp. Plans for the summer camp were made during a recent meet ing of the South Umpqua Com munity church Sunday school members. Camping and outdoor recrea tion will be a part of the week's diversions.
