SIXTEEN MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Tutiday, Junt 3. 1952 Koje Camp Uprisings Far From Unique in History of Warfare Washington (U.PJ The Koje Island prison camp riots are apparently the most violent in which Drisoners of this coun try ever have been involved, al though they are far from unique In the history of warfare. During World War II, 25 Nazi naval officers and submarine technicians broke out of their compound at Papago, Ariz., on Christmas Eve, 1944. All later were recaptured. Tulelake Incident Told In 1943 there was an unsuc cessful Japanese uprising at Tulelake, Calif. There also was Second Cover Spray For Pears, Apples Due by June 10 The second cover spray for control of codling moth on pears and apples should be completed on June 10, according to L. G. G e n t n e r . entomologist from Southern Oregon Branch Exper iment station, and C. B. Cordy, county extension agent for horticulture. Recommended application for pears is 1V4 pounds of 50 per cent DDT for 100 gallons. If less than 500 gallons an acre is used, the DDT should be increased un til at least 7 pounds an acre is applied. In speed sprayers use 7 pounds an acre, the authorities added. Apple Spray Sprayers on apples should use 2V5 pounds of 50 per cent DDT in 100 gallons being sure that at least 12 pounds an acre is used. In speed sprayers use 12 pounds an acre. In home orchards use one-half pound in 5 gallons and use 5 gallons for each mature ' tree. While this spray Is timed for control of codling moth, the men pointed out that the addition of a material for mite control would also be desirable. There are two alternative programs which could be followed, they explained, "We prefer to add 1 pint of 20 per cent or one-half pint of 40 per cent TEPP an acre in this spray, to be followed by a spray of aramite when the mites become numerous enough to cause a small amount of leaf damage on the tree. That would probably be in the late June and should control the mites until the next codling moth - spray. TEPP should be handled with caution and should be applied during fast drying conditions to prevent fruit injury." Tell Alternative Gentner and Cordy noted that the alternative would be to add aramite to this spray and follow it again at a later date with an other aramite spray. "It is doubtful," they said, "if an ara mite spray now would hold until the next codling moth spray, as that will not be called for until late July." Aramite should be used at the rate of Hi pounds to 100 gal lons, they said, or in speed sprayers 8 pounds should be used for an acre. The use of ara mite this early in the season may result In leaf damage, especially onjou, it was pointed out. Liquid spreader depositors apparently increase this damage to a certain extent, they concluded, so where aramite is used it would be pref erable to use Z-l spreader, Mrs. Frisbie's Retirement Told Mrs. Blanche Frisbie, a county health nurse in Jackson county for the past 20 years, retired Monday, according to Dr. A. Erin Mcrkcl, county health officer. Mrs. Frisbie was supervising nurse of the department at the time of her retirement, a position she had held for about eight year. Mrs. Frisbie was considered outstanding as a supervising health nurse, not only by those in this unit, but by health officers of the state. Dr. Mcrkel said. Her retirement from the unit was re ceived with reRret by the county health department workers, the doctor added. In private life, the retiring nurse is Mrs. Ray Frisbie. and she lives with her husband at 2447 Lyman avenue. Several out-of-county nurses now are being con sidered to replace her. a riot of Italian POW'a at Ft. Lawton, Okla. An Army spokesman said big problem in handling Ger man POWs was prevention of political atrocities. Members of Hitler's Gestapo and Nazi party were the most incorrigible. For offenses committed in U. S. prisons, 14 Germans were ex ecuted, one was sentenced to be executed but the sentence was commuted ts 20 years impris onment. 12 Murders Recorded In addition, available records for the 379,000 Germans impris oned in this country during World War II shows 12 murders, two forced suicides by Nazi me thods, and 43 other suicides. A spokesman said that was not bad considering the fact that the first 300.000 were brought over so rapidly there was no time for screening. After screening and segrega tion of the Gestapo and Nazi party members from the non Nazis, there was very little trouble, he said. There also were 51,500 Ital ian and 5,400 Japanese prison ers brought to the U. S. during World War II. By comparison, figures cur rently available for the last three and a half months alone, show this record for Koje: Feb. 18 One American sol dier killed and one wounded and 69 North Korean civilians internees killed and 142 wound ed as rioting broke out in the compound, March 13 One American officer Injured, 12 Communists killed and 26 wounded as riot flared in troop compound. April 10 One American officer wounded, four Korean guards and three Communist prisoners killed, 57 Communists wounded and six Korean guards wounded. May 28 Fourth riot broken up as U. S. and British troops rushed into the compound, fir ing rifles into the air and quell ing the rock-throwing, rebelli ous prisoners with tear gas. Abiding by Convention An Army spokesman said Un ited Nations forces are abiding fully by the Geneva Convention in the treatment of war prison ers. One regulation provides that each prisoner must get at least 1,200 calorics of food a day. Asked how the Koje prisoners were fqd, he said details would have to come from the Far East. But general policy has been to provide the food to each com pound's kitchen where it is pre pared in the compound's kit chen by the prisoners and dis tributed by the prisoners.
