Choose Hallmark Graduation Cards from iyUlliHlfln,wnM8lt Shrine Golf Tournament Next Sunday Salem About 400 golfers from all over Oregon will take part in the second annual Shrin ers Hospital Benefit tournament sponsored by the Salem Shrine club on June 1 at the Salem Golf club. The tournament, to be run off in one day, is open to all golfers. They will be segregated into four flights and will battle for over $2,000 In prizes. The cham pionship flights will be for those with 0 to 5 handicaps. The first flight is to be for those with handicaps of 6 to 12; second flight 13-20 and third flight 21 to 27. Sixteen four-man teams al ready have been entered In the club team match which will be played right along with regular tourney action. The winning team will receive a $250 per petual trophy, and thus far they have registered from Portland, Corvallis, Albany, Eugene, Klamath Falls, Bend and Salem. Last year Bill Johnson, Cor vallis, won the tournament by shooting a two under par 70. Skip Nagler, Eugene, was second with a 71 and Jack Russell, Sa lem, was third with a 72. All will be entered again, along with such other top Oregon linksmen as Dick Yost of Portland, Bob Atkinson and Sid Milligan of Eugene, Ken Wilson of Albany and Bill Wittenberg of Salem. First prize this year will be a Bulova wrist watch and a 30-inch trophy. Approximately 60 other prizes, including a 12 cylinder Lincoln Zephyr auto and a wom an's formal, have been lined up by the Shrine Club committee, Prizes will also be available for "best dressed golfers. There will be an entry fee which will Include green fee. Reservations can be made by contacting the Hospital commit tee, 411 Masonic Bldg., Salem. Lewis Cops Net Mantle Ashland Wesley (Tex) Lewis, Ashland, is campus tennis cham pion at Southern Oregon college for the second consecutive year. The number one man on the college varsity yesterday defeat ed Don Stuckey, Ashland, 7-5, 6-1, 10-8 to climax a month-long tournament by 16 college tennis players. Others who were eliminated earlier were Harry Kannasto, Bob Blair, Maurice Bailey, Bob Phillips, Jack Eidswick and Bob Gerstenberger, Ashland; John Alexandro and Gage Sanden, Medford; Russ Shearer and Wayne Guyer, Klamath Falls; Don DeBernardi and Claren Blake, Roseburg; Glen Roby, Cottage Grove; and Bob Gouley, North Bend. Ted Jantzer Shoot Victor Portland Ted Jantzer, Trail, won the Oregon state 16-yard trapshoot championship Sun day at Portland Gun club. He and Orley B. Milligan, Coos Bay, tied with 198 birds out of 200. In a 75-target shoot off Jantzer downed all and Mil ligan missed one. Milligan was the all-around victor with 384 out of 400 for the two-day shoot. Jantzer was runner-up with 383. Southern Oregon shooters In cluded Charles Skeeters, Pros pect, 96-84; George Jantzer, Medford, 97-83, and Leslie W. Jantzer, Shady Cove, 82-80. STUDS SLATEDRILL The Medford Cheney Studs baseball team will prac tice this evening and Thurs day evening Manager Hoosler Hoffard announced. Sessions will start at 8 p.m. at the fair grounds ball park. The Studs play at Coquille on Saturday and Sunday. Bums Chargr Spitter Used By UNITED PRESS Leo Durocher ranked Giants ace Sal Maglie with baseball's Hall of Fame immortals Wednes day, declaring that "the guy is even a better pitcher than Grov er Cleveland Alexander." But the Dodgers, who had just bitten the dust, 3 to 0, as Maglie shut them out for the second straight time, to win his ninth game in a row, claimed that all of the black-haired right-hander's magic wasnt' legal. Jackie Robinson, following up the charge of Cincinnati Mana ger Luke Sewell that Maglie throws a spitter, claimed that on several occasions he noticed the ball definitely was wet. Pure Hokum Maglie retorted that was pure hokum, and displayed a hand, blackened with resin, which is legal, and said, "How could I throw a spitter with that," The Giants, building up the rhubarb, also countered with the charge that Dodger pitcher Preacher Roe Is the one who slips in the outlawed spitball when he can get away with it. Durncher, comparing Maglie with the late Alexander, who was long ago elected to the Hall of Fame, said, "Sal's curve is better and his fast ball is just as good, although it doesn't dip down as much." Women's Golf Activities The next lesson for the girls' junior golf class at Rogue Valley Country club will be held on Saturday, May 31, at 9 a.m. for junior high girls and 10 a.m. for senior high girls.- Registration for new members is still open. The junior high class now to tals 21 with four new members entered last week. They were Brenda Barrell, Jane Bash, Syl via Teeter and Lucy Spangler.
