United States, Russia In Full Cooperation Against Locust Horde By PHIL NEWSOM United Pri Foreign Analyii It may come a? surprise to mu-y that there is one iield in which the United States and Russia are co operating whole - heart edly. It is against hordes of loc usts threaten ing to visit the Middle East with its worst invasion in 100 years and whose numb- I'hil Newsora ers make man-made armies seem infinitesimal by comparison. To the locust there is no such thing as a "neutral" boundary. This year their eggs infest more than 700,000 square miles of Africa, the Middle East and Asia, and the next week may iell whether the hatching lo custs will be destroyed or will bring the final touches of dis aster to millions of already nun gry people. (Jailed Grasshopper Here The locust of the Middle East i also is familiar in the United States, except that here he is called a grasshopper. In Midwestern pioneer days he was as fearsome as a prairie fire, and it was only about 15 years ago that grasshopper swarms cleared huge areas of the Midwestern bread basket of every green thing and even gnawed at the exposed fabric of automobile cushions. On Larger Scale That's what an area centering on the Middle East is up against now, but on a much vaster scale. The Chadwick-for-State- Rep resentative committee spent $208.22 on behalf of the Salem hotel man for state representa tive from Marion county on the Republican ticket. Attorney Reports Walter W. Foster. Salem, spent $117.13 in his bid for Re publican nomination for dist rict attorney for Polk county. F. Leo Smith spent $100 in behalf of Eugene K. Oppen heimer in his campaign for re turn to the Multnomah county circuit court. Smith also spent $100 in behalf of Virgil H. Lang tiy, judge of the Multnomah county circuit court. San Francisco's Maritime mu seum is now housed in Aquatic Park at the foot of Van Ness av enue fronting on San Francisco bay. the Middle and Near East, more than half of Africa and great areas of Southern Asia, includ ing Soviet Central Asia. The fact that parts of Soviet Asia are threatened may explain Russia s cooperation in the war against the insects. Cooperation Results This year's war against locusts has resulted in international co operation never seen before in the fight against a plague hated since the days of John the Baptist. It is estimated that $11,000,000 will be spent in the locust fight this year. Early-Morning Risers Witness Sale of Fish New York (U.R) Only the early-morning risers among New York City tourists can witness the sale of 1,000,000,000 pounds of fish. Around 7 a.m. each week day, the six-block Fulton Fish Mar ket area, along the East river just south of Brooklyn Bridge, hums with the babel of bargain ing fish sellers and buyers. The largest wholesale fish mart on the east coast, Fulton supplies the city's restaurants, hotels and retailers with nearly 100 different species of fish from haddock to octopuses, smelt to snails. Many of the fish deli cacies come from various parts of the world, including Canada, Mexico, Portugal and South Africa. The Fulton Market was begun in 1664 and is now owned by the city. Fish merchants bid for space at auctions held whenever a rare vacancy occurs. AT REGULAR PRICES 'Oregon Platoon' Planned by Marines Marine Corps recruiters in Oregon will make an effort to enlist an "Oregon Platoon" dur ing the first few weeks in June, it was reported here today by Sgt. Stanley Smith, Marine re cruiter here. Under the plan, if sufficient Oregon men join the Marine Corps there will be formed into a platoon, and will take their boot training together. In ad dition, they will appear in the Portland Rose Festival Parade on June 21 before leaving for camp, and also will be honored when they are through boot training.
