CaL LET'S HAVE IT 0 UT ABOUT CALCIUM With atraight face and all the ponderous dignity with which the medical profession expounds ay- legend! and Mj theories for I'm still on the ah, ah, probation laity, a news paper health columnist said the other day: "Deposits of calcium In the walls of the blood vessels As We Live ELDERLY MOTHER COMPLAINS OF WEDDED SONS' NEGLECT Grown children, after they marry and go to homes of their own, sometimes become so pre occupied with their own interests that they forget and neglect an aging parent. The parent, after sacrificing the best years of her life for her children, Is entitled to better treatment than that. How to get It Is the problem that Is facing the widow who wrote: (Q) "I hare two sons. Both are marritd, own their home, have cars, radloa, TVs, ate. Thay both have children. List your usual expenses, and then add others that might come In the emergency class, such as a warm winter coat, dentist bills, doctor bills, etc. Ask all four of them if they think they have been treating you fairly by doing nothing to help you and by never bothering to come to see you. Ask them how they would feel if, at your age, their children never called them up from one Christmas to another. Then see if this is not an eye-opener to make them re alize how selfish they have been and to take steps at once to mend their ways. Although this bald statement fairly represents the prevailing medical thought, if one can call it thought, about arteriosclerosis or hardening of the arteries, the absurdity of it must be appar ent to any medical student or physician who has an elemen tary knowledge of pathology. Why, away back in the nine teenth century Dr. Osier gave a truer view of it. He said: "Calcificatlon( that if, de posit of calcium) of the arterial wall follows fatty degeneration and sclerosis, and is associated with atheromatous changes , . . It Is by no means always a senile change." No, children, calcium la not deposited in the walls of the ar teries out of a clear sky. This change in the condition or struc tural of the artery wall occurs only as a consequence of degen eration. In view of the wide circula tion of this column it is the duty of any physician or pathologist who finds anything wrong about my teaching to point out the er ror. I promise to print, as the au thor approves, any reasonable correction or contrary view sub mitted, and I'll keep the author's identity secret or reveal it, as he or she may prefer. There is a similar notion in the popular mind in reference to calcium deposits in or around the joints. This causes "arthri tis" or rheumatiz, according to the legend or theory expounded by many medical practitioners. Aside from arbitrary state ments by doctors whose dignity is offended when patients evince any knowledge of nutrition or metabolism, there Is no scientif ic ground for the fear that "too much calcium" in food, water or medicine, will cause calcification or the deposit of calcium in or around the Joints. In every instance such calci fication or deDosit of calcium Is a consequence of sprain, strain, inflammation or degeneration. If any physician or pathologist differs with me about this I In vite him or her to submit a brief statement for publication here and I promise to treat sucn com munication with professional courtesy. This is the first of a series of talks about calcium.. The aecond will follow in a few days. It is an Important subject and I think both doctors and laymen should know more about it.
