The "Wings over Jordan," re-1 nowned Negro choir, will sing at 8 p. m. Monday, May 19, at First Methodist church. The choir, which was organ ized In 1937 and which met with almost Immediate demand, Is now on a good will tour of the country. It seeks to foster friend lier relations between Negro and White races and to combat the influence of communism in America as it influences the American Negro. Organized by the Rev. Glynn T. Settle in Cleveland, O., to show the people of different races and creeds that the Amer ican Negro is a worthy, hard Motion Picture Slated Sunday at First Methodist "A Wonderful Life," a sound film starring James Dunn and featuring Allene Roberts, Arthur Shields and Isobel Withers will be shown at First Methodist church at 7:30 p. m. Sunday. The movie tells the real life story of a person whose greatest satisfaction Is to serve God and his fellow men through his church. Henry Wood, the central character, is both the joy and despair of his family. At the 11 a. m. service Sunday there will be baptism of adults and reception of members. The pastor, the Rev. Meredith Groves, will speak on "The Pot of God," in one of a series on "Using Our Inner Powers." Family Sunday The Crancel choir selection will be "God So Loved the World" and the Junior choir will sing "O Happy Home" and "Now Thank We All Our God." Fam ilies will sit together at the serv ice in observance of Family Sun day. Members of the high school Methodist Youth fellowship will attend a sub-district rally Sun day at 2:30 p. m.-at Wildervllle. Junior high MYF members and their parents will have a 5:30 p.m. potluck dinner. A panel discussion by the young people on "You and Your Family" will follow. working citizen, the choir has appeared in 43 states, averaging more than 50,000 and giving con certs night after night. Spiritual! Tall Story It is said that the spirituals sung by Wings over Jordan ac tually tell the story of the Amer ican Negro "through music, feel ing and depth of understanding." On one of the featured radio programs of the Columbia Broad casting company, the choir has been heard on Sunday mornings, except during the time during World War II when it toured Europe to sing to servicemen. It was the only choral group to be sent to the battlefront. The group has appeared in New York's Town Hall, Madison Square Garden and Carnegie Hall, Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles and Convention Hall in Philadelphia. Nw Pattern Until recently, Wings Over Jordan has followed, of neces slty, the pattern of an entertain ment group and has sung con certs which were underwritten by advance guarantees and through sale of tickets. However, the choir has been withdrawn from the commercial field where it was handicapped In carrying out its "mission." It is felt that everyone .whether or not he has the price of a ticket, should have an opportunity to hear the group. In order to reach the greatest number the choir has determined to appear in as many places as possible, wherever people will hear them, without admission charge and purely on a free will offering basis. ...,,..., i -: n First naptlst churrh (Conservative) North Central at Fifth.
