May 13. 1952 Society and Clubs Convention Report, Annual Installation Features Meeting The need ior parents to give their children more love, few er material things, and to instill In them a sense of responsibil ity rather than obedience was (tressed Friday afternoon by Mrs. Alvin Boswell in her re port of the annual convention of Oregon Congress of Parents and Teachers to the Jackson PTA. Mrs. Boswell, who was also Installed as new president of the Jackson unit Friday afternoon, was Jackson delegate to the tate convention. She returned, Inspired to continue i n PTA work, she told fellow members, describing the state convention as a "wonderful experience." New officers were installed at Jackson by Mrs. Loyd Brans ford, president of the Medford PTA council. Serving with Mrs. Boswell will be Mrs. Edgard H. Sims, vice-president; Mrs. Mur iel Harvey, secretary, and Mrs. R. E. Wicker, treasurer. Following installation, Mrs. Boswell presented Mrs. C. H. Reld, retiring president, with her past president s pin. Mrs Reld thanked her officers and 11 committee chairmen for the work done during the 1951-52 chool year, calling on each for a short report. All mothers of pre-school chil dren were urged by Mrs. Reld to bring them to the health check-up, scheduled for May 15 at Jackson school. Children, en tering school In September will be given a health examination free of Charge, by a competent doctor and nurse, she explained H. W. Gustin, school princl pal, thanked Mrs. Jack Harney, retiring vice-president ana pro gram chairman, for the "out standing program work" done during the year. He also said farewell to mothers of sixth grade children, who will be en tering Junior high next Septenv ber, thanking them for the "splendid cooperation shown during their years at Jackson. Parents of sixth grade stu dents will be special guests Thursday night at the meeting of the Junior high PTA. Preceding the business meet ing Mrs. Harney presented a program, featuring Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts of the Jackson school. "Old McDonald Had a Farm" was dramatized by Mrs. Harvey Brandau's Cub Scout den and the presentation of colors cere mony was given by Mrs. W. D. Durkee'i sixth grade Girl Scout troop. Patsy Maxson was given the Girl Scout award of the Jackson PTA. The presentation was made by Mrs. Durkce In the absence of Mrs. John Russell, Jr., chairman. The Girl Scout song closed the program. Mrs. F. E. Burdick. treasurer, reported that the April Frolic brought in $823 for the PTA and student body of the school. Mrs. C. Marion Smith, hospit ality chairman, announced that Mrs. Ruth Bolton's room had won the PTA attendance prize. Refreshments were served In the cafeteria with mothers of first and second grade pupils acting as hostesses. Mothers Honored At Sorority Event Nu Phi Mu and Beta Sigma Phi sororities held the annual Mothers' day luncheon May 4 at Rogue Valley Country club Mrs. Donald Lue and Miss Jackie Walker were in charge of decorations and provided each member and guest with cor sages. Tables were decorated with bowls of tulips. Attending the event were Miss Janet Walton. Mrs. Eldred Clover, Miss Bette Ridgcly, Mrs. Jerald Fletcher. Miss Walker. District Meeting Of Service Guild Held in Medford Miss Lillian Johnson, division secretary of Wesleyan Service guild, outlined the future pro gram of the organization during a district meeting of southern Oregon guilds held here Saturday. Miss Johnson, who had Just attended the quadrennial confer ence of the Methodist church, said the guild theme for the com ing four years would be "that the kingdom of God may be re alized" and that emphasis would be placed on six phases, spirit ual growth, widening fellow ship, the world churches, peace, missions and discipleship. Wesleyan Service guild is an organization for gainfully em ployed women of the Methodist church. It is pointed out that the program is streamlined to cover the business woman s in terests, and that in addition members conduct study and prayer groups and attend re treats. Mrs. Everett Faber, Central Point, Oregon conference sec retary for the guild, had arrang ed the district meeting here, at tended by women from Coquille. Ashland, Grants Pass, Klamath Falls and Medford. Sessions opened with a recep tion at 3:30 o'clock In Miss John son's honor, and a buffet dinner was served at 6:30 o clock Hostess groups were Ruth Esth er and Susannah guilds of First Methodist church here. - A worship center had been ar ranged using a shawl made in China and candlesticks and cross made In Jerusalem from holly wood. There was also a display of old Bibles. The articles had been loaned by Mrs. Frank Blaar. During the afternoon Miss Johnson conducted a workshop for the delegates. At the evening session Mrs. W. T. Frost, Med ford, who attended the San Fran cisco conference reported on ses sions of the World Federation of Methodist Women. Mrs. Charles Adamson, presi dent of Ruth Esther guild, took charge of afternoon devotions using "Light Into World Dark ness," as a topic. Mrs. Frances McDougall sang the Twenty Seventh Psalm, "The Lord Is My Light." Mesdames J. C. Kaylor, Jack Harris and William Wilson sang during the dinner. The reception committee con sisted of Mesdames Adamson, Bernlct Kunzman, Marjorie Hopkins, Thomas Grant, L. A. White and Misses Marjorie Sandford, Marjorie Anderson and Welma Peabody. Mrs. J. D. Fleming and Mrs. Bernlce Kunz man poured during the recep tion. t Shower Parly Honors Mrs. Kenneth Walch Reese Creek Mrs. H. C. Callihan and Mrs. Ben Gardner were hostesses for a shower May 9 honoring Mrs. Kenneth Walch. The event was In the Gardner home. Attending were Mesdames Klrby, J. Youth CiubPlans Dance Friday Night Wagner Creek Wagner Creek Youth club will sponsor a benefit dance in the school house on Wagner creek road Friday evening. May 18. The event will aid the club secre tary, Miss Betty Hopper, In her campaign for queen of the Phoe nix May festival. She is spon sored by the youth club. Annual Luncheon Health Association Set for Thursday Dr. Charles Bradly, director of Oregon psychiatric services for children will speak at the annual luncheon and business meeting of Jackson County Pub lic Health association to be held Thursday, May 15. Luncheon is set for 12 noon in St. Mark's Episcopal guild hall. Dr. Bradley will discuss the various aspects of psychiatric clinics for children, and the need for such a clinic in Jackson county. The subject was first discussed at a meeting here for which Mclvin Murphy, director of Oregon Mental Health asso ciation, was speaker last winter. At that time great interest was shown in the proposed clin ic, and Dr. Bradley will clarify some of the points under dis cussion. During the annual business session, election of officers will be held. Anyone interested is Invited to attend the meeting. Mother-Daughter Dinner Is Given More than 80 mothers and daughters attended the May meeting of the Christian Busin ess and Professional Women at the Medford hotel Monday eve ning. Table decorations of lilacs and yellow tulips were the work of Mrs. C. C. Haggard and Mrs. Archie Pierce. Miss Alice Wool- cy spoke using Chapter 63, Ver ses 7 to 9, from the Book of Isaiah from the Bible, as her subject. A mother-daughter quartet composed of Mrs. John Eby, Miss Carolyn Eby, Mrs. George McUne and Miss Ellen Kay McUne, furnished songs. tone Pine Extension To Hear County Agent Lone Pine Miss Eula Win- termote, county home extension agent, will lead the lesson. Reese Creek Group Elects New Officers; Chairman Honored Reese Creek Mrs. Ben Gardner was elected chairman of the Reese Creek Home Ex tension unit during a meeting May 6 in the home of Mrs. Ted Flury. She will serve with Mrs. Tom Vestal, vice-chairman; Mrs. Ira Connor, secretary, and Mrs. Al fred Peile, treasurer. There were a number of vis itors at the meeting including Mrs. Henry Greer, Mrs. Kirby Tant, Mrs. Kenneth Larson, Mrs. Kenneth Dufour, Mrs. Robert Humphrey, Mrs. Charles Stone and Mrs. Dick Uhrich. The les son was on buckles and belts. Members voted to give $10 toward a summer camp trip for a 4-H member. When the meet ing closed a handkerchief show er was given for the outgoing chairman, Mrs. Harold Calli han. The family plans to move from the vicinity and have sold their home. I Veterans' Bridge Club Give Weekly Winners Nine tables of players were at Camp White Thursday eve ning for the weekly session of the Camp White Veterans' Bridge club. Holding first place for the north-south playing pos ition were Mrs. W. W. Steven son and Edward Mathis, with a score of 135 points, and east west first place winners were Hoke Smith and Valentine Flohs, who scored 136 points. Other north-south winners were John Solheim and Budd Gail, second, 131V&; Marvin R. Kahn and John Levine, third, 1 1 8 ; Roy Pruitt and Mrs. Her bert Scitz, fourth, 111; Mrs. Paul A. Hatton and W. Entertainment for the meeting j; was furnished by two grade school students, Phyllis Briggs, who plpyed two piano selections and Joan Shepard, who sang "Mother," accompanied by Cecil Kee.
