Cottaee Grove: standing, Dick Thorpe, Ash land; Monte Kounz, Medford; and All Men Need English Sculptor Declares BY ROBERT MUSEL London (U.R) What every man needs is a bust. A bust of his wife, that is, said sculptor Peter Lambda. "It should be undraped," he added, "and if the lady's figure is good enough it should go down to a half-length or a lull lengtn nude. Believe me wives will find it the best investment they ever made." Surprise for Husband Lambda spoke while crowds at the Royal Academy summer ex hibition surrounded his half length nude of Linda Christian for which the film actress sat as a surprise present for her hus band, Tyrone Power. "She is having it cast in bronze for their garden in Hollywood," Lambda said. "But personally I think things like this belong in the bedroom." "The bedroom?" "Or anywhere else in plain sight," said Lambda. "The idea is it Will constantly remind a man of the jewel he married. Photo graphs are intended to do the same but how can a flat picture compare with the real thing, the curves, the contours and so on?" Have It Done While Young "Suppose a wife has changed with the years?" "All the more reason she should have it done while she is young," Lambda declared. "It will remind a man of the privil ege accorded him. Besides, as a student of psychology, I believe statues like these will tend to keep men's minds at home, as well as their bodies." "Women might be too modest to pose." Strictly Professional "Pouf,", said the sculptor. Customs Censor Studies Sex Author's Interview New York U.R) A customs censor stood by Monday to listen to a tape-recorded interview with Bertrand Russell to make sure it woesn't contain any em barrassing references to sex. The interview was impounded by a customs inspector at Idle wild Airport because Russell once wrote a book about sex. Russell will celebrate his 80th birthday next Sunday. Bust of Wife, They go to the doctor and take their clothes off, don t tney? Well, a sculptor is very much the same thing strictly professional and no passes. I got suspicious of women who said: 'I wouldn't do a thing like that,' as some said when they saw me working on Linda. "I say to myself: "They must have bust size 85 and reinforced concrete girdles.' " Lambda said he had had re quests already from wives for statues similar to Linda's. SF Chamber Adopts Scheme To Taxes by Government By LYLE C. WILSON Washington (U.R) The San Francisco Chamber of Com merce comes up now with a new attack on high taxes which would bring them down if Its idea were adopted generally. The San Franciscans simply adopted this resolution: "The San Francisco Chamber of Commerce will refrain from seeking increases in federal ap propriations for support of local or regional benefits not urgently required for essential govern mental services or for national defense." Congressmen Advised California members of Con gress have been advised of the Chamber's action. In exchange for that sensible promise not to raid the treasury for local proj ects, the Chamber asked In re turn: 1. That taxes be not in creased. 2. That government spending in the next fiscal year be limited strictly to government income. 3. That there be some real re ductions in government spending for other than national defense. In other words, the Chamber wants, first, a balanced budget in the next fiscal year. There after by further economies it hopes for tax reductions. Con gressmen say the chamber's ap proach Is a sound one. Known At Pressure Groups Chambers of Commerce, like labor unions, farm organizations and other blocs of citizens, com prise what is known around town as "pressure groups." Pres sure groups apply pressure for what they want. More often than not they want bigger slices of government money than they are entitled to get and consider ably more than the country can afford. And they frequently get it. Local pressure groups can and often do defeat congressmen who oppose them. National pressure groups can be deadly, too.. That Is why members of Congress so often are compelled to rise above principle and vote for costly projects which they would op pose if they dared. Might Ease Tax Load If the people back home country-wide would follow the New India City On Draft Boards Boston (U.PJ A new city for Indian is being drafted on drawing boards at Massachu setts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass. It is being created by three M. I. T. professors who were handed the "city-planner's-dream" assignment by the state Department last May. All mem bers of the institute's depart ment of city and regional plan ning, they are Frederick Adams, Roland B. Greeley, who have both spent time at the Indian site, and John T. Howard. The metropolis is to-be situa ted around the India govern ment's newly-proposed, west coast port at the head of the Gulf of Kutch. Inhabitants are to be the banished Sindhi people. Need for the new city and for the exact designation that it is for the Sindhi arose after India had won its independence from Great Britain. India suffered a religious-political partition into Pakistan and India. The Mohammedan major ity in Pakistan's capital, Kara chi, forced some 50.000 Hindus from the state of Sindhi. They migrated in droves to Bombay. Homeless and penniless, the Hin dus have created a slum-breeds-crime menace; thousands are actually living and sleeping on the streets. Expulsion of the Sindhi did more than hurt the pride of the new government of India. Kar achi had been a chief port, rank ing with Bombay, and a new west-coast port and solution to the pathetic plight of the Sind hi had to be found. Cut Down example of the San Francisco Chamber and take the heat off their congressmen, some of the tax load might be taken off the peoples' backs. Long years of disappointment have shown that Congress and a President usu ally will be on the side of spend ing and against the minority economizers. So there is not much chance of relief from Washington. The San Francisco Chamber of Commerce may have started a national trend of self denial but it isn't likely, Autoist, Taxi Drivers Play 'Tally-Ho' Game Washington (U.R) It was "tally-ho" in downtown Wash ington with a hit-and-run driver the fox and 40 taxicab drivers the hounds. Ernest Davis was the quarry of the hunt after his collision with a taxicab. The irate hackle, John Branch, Instantly switched on his two-way radio and alerted the company's dispatcher. The call was sounded and 40 radio cabs joined in the 60-mile an-hour chase. The mobile "hounds" soon mouse-trapped their victim and brought him to justice.
