r - SAME THE WORLD OVER-Typlcal of mothers the world oyer are Senora Don Ross Markmann de Gonzalez Vidcla (left), Chilean. ; Mother of the World, and Chinese-born Mrs. Toy Len Goon of I Portland, Me. The two mothers were presented with citations at New York by the American Mothers committee. On The Side by e. v. Durtmg ' (Distributed by King Features Syndicate, Inc.) Another inventor to whom the feminine portion of the population owes a vote of thanks ie Solomon Goldberg. He in vented the crinkled hair-pin. Be ore that all hairpins were straight and difficult to keep in ,the hair. The crinkled hairpin cured that distressing situation. Mr. Goldberg is reported to have made a fortune from this simple Invention. Am asked if any winner of that male beauty competition for the title of "Mr. America" ever became a film star. Not that I know of. In fact, I don't even know of a "Mr. America" get ting a Hollywood offer. It could be a mistake. Such a person ality, properly and cleverly handled, might become quite a box office attraction. One of the greatest box office attractions in movie history broke into pic tures by winning a "most Hand' some Man" contest conducted by a woman's magazine. That was Francis X. Bushman. The feminine film fans went wild about Bushman. He Jammed the theaters with adoring females for years. Asking Queries from Clients. Q. How long has Sunday professional baseball been legal in Brooklyn? I claim over 40 years.. A. Quite right, sir. Forty-eight years, to be exact. Q. See Rida Johnson Young credited with writing "Mother Machree," I always thought this was one of Ernest Ball's greatest hits. A. Mrs. Young wrote the words of "Mother Machree." I always thought this music. Chauncey Olcott introduced it. . . . Q. My sister-in-law says Garbo played the part of Sappho on the screen. Same part Olga Nethersole played on the stage. I say she never did. Who wins the kiss proof lipstick. A. Garbo played part of Sappho in a film titled "Inspiration." Robert Montgom ery was her leading man. Baby Shoes Have you your baby shoes among your souvenirs? I haven't. In fact, I haven't even a picture of myself as a baby. Too bad. I have heard I was really a beautiful baby. Anyway, more parents are now saving baby shoes than ever before. A man named Vierj N. Lash, of San Pierre, Ind., has established a highly profitable business de voted to electroplating baby shoes for preservation mementos Among the Marrlad Take the work the average housewife with two small chil dren handles. What would it be worth In the domestic help mar get? Well, maids and cooks are paid $173 a month plus board and room. That Is equal to about $60 a week. But this does not in clude care of the children. A nurse for the kiddies would come to at least S40 a week more. So what the average housewife does is, from a salary standpoint, worth $100 a week, minimum. When you consider she works seven days a week it must be increased; $125 is prob ably more accurate. Quaint Fallow A current film depicts the life of that colorful baseball character "Dizzy" Dean. Dean was somewhat "dizzy" during his diamond career, but in that respect just wasn't in it with "Rube" Waddell. "Rube" was one of the greatest pitchers of all time. Some say the greatest, when they could get him to pitch. He had a habit of not showing up for the game. Searchers were sent out for him. Here are some of the things they found Waddell doing when he should have been at the base ball park. 1. Playing in a sandlot game with a bunch of kids. 2. Posing in a shop window as an automaton. S. Acting as a volun teer bartender. Every time he served a drink he had one him self. 4. Riding on a hook and ladder wearing a fireman's hat. 5. Wrestling an alligator. That was in Florida. After seeing a professional trainer wrestle an alligator, "Rube" tried it him self. Cigars Englishmen favor dry cigars. This choice is frequently sub jected to criticism by Americans. Now Juan B. Diaz Jr., well known Cuban cigar manufac turer, says the Englishmen have the right idea. Observed Senor Diaz: "Americans insist on green cigars which look bad, taste foul and smell atrociously." I don't like dry cigars either. I go for the happy medium which is the way they are kept in all the first class cigar stands in the U.S.A. 1 know of. Perhaps Diaz didn't really mean what he said. But a nasty crack at American tastes always goes over well In England. Dead line Sunday Claulfleda ta at noon Saturdays.
