Cheney Studs Make First Home Appearance Today; Face Raiders Director! of Rogue Valley Baseball, which iponiored pro ball here for three seasons are assisting the Medford Cheney Eiudj launch their semi-pro league campaign. They are heading up a tick et eale campaign aiming at big attendance at the Stud'i opening series in the South western Oregon league. The Cheney nine battles Drain here Saturday night. May 17, and Sunday afternoon. May 18. Tickets for each game sell for to cents. Rogue Villey Baseball of ficials are contacting merch nts to have tickets on sale in the Tarious stores. The Medford Cheney Studs baseball club opens Its season at home today with a nine-inning non-league fracas at 2 p. m. at the fairgrounds ball park against Southern Oregon college. It will be the second meeting of the two clubs. The Studs nip ped the Raiders 8 to 7 in an ex tra Inning fray recently. The collegians, which have shown considerable improvement, (re timing for an upset. Don Jacobson Is probable tarting chucker for the college nine with Ron Maurer doing the receiving. Outfielders probably will be Ken Kimura, Lou Maur er and Don Campbell. In the Infield the Raiders may have Don Wilkinson, ex-Medford high and Keith Johnson, Parsons and Burdill. Studs Line-Up Told The Studs will start with either Bob Nelson or Clarence Mellbye on the hill and Frank Roelandt catching. Snuffy Smith, Moose Blevlns and Norm Lucich are slated for outfield chores and Alex McDonald, Marvin Cartwright, George Git xen and Ben Cheney for the In field. The Babe got off to a bad start on the first hole, driving into the rough, approaching into a trap and taking six strokes to get down. She settled down some, but at the end of 18 had a 77, two-over-women's par on the tough Broadmoor Golf and Country Club course. Betty Kirk, Font Verda, Fla., scored a 77 to hold fifth place with a 380 and Alice Bauer, Mar ine's sister, was tied with Patty Berg for sixth both with 383 's. Alice shot a 77 today and Patty had a two-under-par 73. Clues Given On Democrat On Bout Card YMCA sponsors have listed clues concerning the Identity of the Democratic Mystery Fighter who will battle a prominent Republican on the Y boxing card on Friday, May 16, election night. They said that he Is known tn Medford circles as "The Democrat" and that he holds federal position, the high est of its kind in Medford. He was an excellent athlete in college. He even dabbled In politics at that time. His present position keeps him in fine condition, for, in effect, he really carries the mail. The first resident of Jack son county who correctly identifies this mystery fighter, by mailing his answer to the YMCA. will be awarded a pair of ringside tickets to the big election night card. The same procedure and prise has been arranged for guessing the name of the Democrat's Republican opponent. In other bouts, Medford and Roseburg YMCA fistieuffers will contend. The main mix is between Junior McDonald, Medford, and Doyle Hall, Roseburg lightweight kayo ar tist. Jerry Jennings, Medford 160-pounder, will trade pokes with Golden Glove Champ Perc Pendergast in the semi windup. An election night social with refreshments is also planned and Y officials antici pate one of the biggest events of the season. Blackboards will be set up at the Y to show the latest returns on the pri mary election. Oregon State Crewmen Edged by Cal Jayvees Oakland, Calif. (U.R) Two yniversity of California reserve crews defeated Oregon State and Southern California varsity shells in separate races at the Oakland estuary Saturday. A close first race with OSC was ended 100 yards from the finish when the No. 3 and No. 8 men in the Oregon shell caught a crab. The Bears' time was six minutes and three sec onds for the 2000-meter match. In the Trojan meet, Californ ia won out by about a bow's length to finish in five minutes and 58 seconds. The Chieftains amassed lOHi points and got nine berths in the state meet next week-end at Cor- vallis. Malin followed with 81 points and six state tussle spots. Other team totals were Phoe nix 79, Henley 75j, Jackson ville 54 and Merrill 39. Jackson ville and Merrill each got four state tourney places ana rnoenix two. Overcomes Merrill Runner Boulter won both hurdle events and was first in the high Jump. In the relay he overcame a Merrill lead and stayed in front by a step down the stretch to the tape. Ralph Hiner, Rogue River, ran the fastest 100-yard dash here this season with a :10.1 clocking as he edged out Reeves of Mer rill. Reeves beat Hiner in the 220-yard sprint. It was an interesting meet with the outcome in doubt until the final events were recorded Jacksonville, which wound up fifth, led at an early stage of the meet. Then a see-saw battle be gan. Rogue River had the meet clinched after the next to last event was recorded. The Chiefs, getting a first and tie for second and third in the high Jump, raised their total to 91 VS while Malin and Phoenix each had 77. They couldn't be overtaken by the relay outcome. He won a tournament conducted by Medford Junior Chamber of Commerce at How- ard school. Harrison, who won the B dla dem, beat Paul Zeleznlck, St, Mary's school, for the overall crown. Zeleznick won the A division by topping Bob Cooper, Howard. Harrison won over Dan Cuthbertson, Lincoln, in his own class. The dlvison champs and run ners-up will be taken to Portland for the state tournament held by the Young Oregonians at Jantzen beach on May 24. Shady Cove Bennie Wells, 14, a student at the Elk-Trail school,' Friday won the Upper Rogue Marble tournament, it was reported Saturday by members of Steelhead post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Shady Cove, which sponsored the event. Young Walls, who won over 13 other contestants from Shady Cove, Elk-Trail and Prospect schools, will be flown to the state-wide tournament in Port land May 24, sponsors said. The state contest is held by the Young Oregonians In coopera tion with the VFW. The winner of the state contest will go to the national compe tition in Durham, N. C, in June. Grants Pass Millers Vie At CP Today Central Point Mothers will be admitted free when Central Point Millers and Grants Pass baseball clubs play here this afternoon. Game time Is 2 o'clock. The fracas will be the opening Rogue Valley legaue game for both teams. Elsewhere in the circuit Glendale plays at Cave Junction and Butte Falls at Prospect. Ash land draws a bye. Central Point's crew is made up of youths from the Central Point and Medford areas mainly. Carl Hueners is expected to get the starting call on the mound for the Millers with Bill Donahoe or Truman Brown. In Grants Pass the Millers will face a team that will provide some of their toughest opposition of the season. They are hoping that the hustle they have shown in practice will carry over into league action as they run into the merchants this afternoon. The Millers have been working out evenings for a number of weeks in anticipation of another summer of baseball. McGraw-Lewis Team Two-Ball Golf Victor Everett McGraw and Mrs. Clayton Lewis Friday won the mixed two-ball golf foursome at Rogue Valley Country club with a 35 net.
