'Old-Time Religion' Returing To Nation With New-Time Twist Editor's No!.! This Is the second of a series on the re ligious revival in the United Stales. By H. D. QUIGO New York U.R) "That old time religion" seems to be back wilh a new-time twist. Americans are giving more to church and charity, paying more attention to preachers, leaning more on the Scriptures and re ligious themes than ever before. ' "There are evidences," one Bible publisher said, "that lay men are more interested In re ligion than they have been in a generation." Church Outgrew Country In that generation 1926 to 1950 the church outgrew the country two to one. A recent aurvey by the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the U.S.A. shows that the Roman Catholic, Jewish, and Protestant faiths as a whole increased dur ing those 24 years irom 53,397, 675 to 85,319,274 a 59.8 per cent gain while U.S. population increased 28.6 per cent. Religious-affiliated Americans now constitute 57 per cent of the country's population. The Na tional Council says: "So far as can be gathered from statistics, this is the highest percentage in U.S. history." Contributions Gain The council figures Protes- WJrMORE DELICIOUS) Xls MACARONI J tant contributions last year ex ceeded $1 billion a 150 per cent gain in 10 years. It's esti mated that Catholic and Jewish contributions accounted for an other billion. A Wall Street Journal sur vey disclosed Afnericans giving to charity at the greatest rate in history. A decade ago charity giving totaled $1.5 billion; last year, $4.2 billion a 180 per cent gain during a time when national Income rose only 180 per cent. But the big religious upswing seems to have been in the last three years. The director of the CBS network "Church of the Air" said: "Three years ago I used to tell the ministers they could expect 200 to 300 letters in response to a sermon now adays it's anywhere from 800 to 1,200." The Catholic Church, which for years has provided such ra-dio-standbys as "The Catholic Hour," now has 12 local radio and five television shows in the New York archdiocese alone. Three months ago, Catholic Bishop Fulton J. Sheen went on television for an every-Tuesday-night lecture. Ills competition, on opposite networks, seemed formidable comedian Milton Bcrle and singer Frank Sinatra. But he wos an instant hit, his response mall averaging 4,500 letters a week and one week hitting 7,800. The Protestant Broadcasting and Film Commission, which co ordinates the Protestant pro grams, reports that In 1950 there were 250,000 requests from lis teners for copies of radio ser mons. In 1951, that figure jumped to 720,000. The minis ter on one of the big Sunday programs said: Mail in Cartons My mail used to arrive In parcels; now they bring It In large cartons." The commission Inst year pro duced 1,058 radio and television programs nationally, including Dr. Ralph W. Sockman on "Na tional Radio Pulpit," Dr. John S. Bonnell on "National Ves pers," and Dr. Norman Vincent Peale on "The Art of Living." But Its programs also include television puppets enacting Bib lical stories; children's programs showing Christian life as an ex citing adventure; a radio edition of the Bible in which Scripture is read with music and sound effects, and a television show that picks up services in churches from Maine to Cali fornia and brings them to the living room.
