Riverside Your Health and Its Care By DR. WILLIAM BRADY. M.D. Readers should iddresi lnqulileiv to: William Brady. 365 El Camlno. Beverly Hills. Cat LET'S FLUORINATE The Nebraska State Dental As sociation is exerting powerful pressure on the city council to f luorinate the water supply, wrote a reader, about the mid dle of March (letter not dated). Aside from its c o s t, and the fact that it runs counter to Brady princlples , , Come, come, now, it would be as sensible to say chlorination, filtration or any other sanitary or health protective precaution runs "counter to democratic prin ciples." ... we adults (I mean mentally as well as physically) fear that organic fluorideshave no place in our bodies, at least in quanti ties. May we have your opinion about this? (Signed) My dear child, you may be an adult physically but your logic Is puerile. Long, long ago, before I. quit brushing my teeth, the Nebraska State Dental Association or possibly it was just the Lincoln branch sent me a letter com mending me for my teachings in regard to care and conservation of the teeth. I believe the let ter is somewhere In my scrap- J)ook, but I can't ask some one else to search for it a task too odious for me, much worse than reading my own stuff after It has been printed. Probably few dentists in Ne braska, or any other part of North America, would utter un qualified approval of my teach ings today, but I still think the dentists of America render a health service that is indispensa ble, when and if their patients have enough sense to give them the chance. From the Lincoln reader's let ter I Infer that the question of fluorinating the water as a meas ure of prevention of dental caries is to be decided by popular vote. If so, it Is probably settled now in the right way, I hope. Still, you never can tell. There may be just enough dumb enough voters there with queer notions about health to defeat the effort of the State Dental Association. If that has happened I'd say it is Just what the stup the people of the benighted com munity deserve. On Tristan da Cunha where prior to '49-'50, the residents have had the finest teeth In the world, samples of the drinking water analyzed at intervals of ten years or so contained 0.2 and 0.3S parts of fluorine per'mllllon which may account in part for the excellent teeth of Tristan's people. Prior to '49 Tristan peo ple lived on potatoes, milk, cheese, butter, eggs (of sea birds and their own geese, ducks and chickens), fish and shellfish, on rare occasions fresh mutton or beef (their sheep and cows are for wool and milk, too precious to kill for meat), and such grain as ships might bring them If any ships visited the lonely isles In a season. In '49-'S0, however, English and South African In terests built a canning factory on Tristan to market the abun UNIVERSAL TILLER Designed lat flealblliry Built for lon( service Priced from$M0to$15J.50 (Incl. power drive) Phone 7231 or Era. 2-7791 HOME OWNERS SPECIALTIES 74 NORTH MAIN ASHLAND Wednesday, May 7, 1951 Medics Unhelpful in Violent Death Cases Chicago (U.R) Most doc tors are of little or no help in solving crimes of violent death, according to medical expert. They are reluctant to testify as experts in court and cannot with moderate competence as sume the public office of coroner, said Dr. W. E. B. Hall. Hall, director of laboratories at the Chambersburg, Pa., hos pital, wrote his opinions In the Journal of Criminal Law, Crimi nology and Police Science, pub lished by Northwestern Univer sity s law school. Hall said the medical profes sion has been derelict in not acquainting its members with the legal aspects of medicine and has "neglected its social respon sibilities" In failing to meet the need for this type of specialized knowledge. He said medical schools should give at least basic course in legal medicine to their students. Of the 300,000 deaths reported in the U. S. each year from ob scure suspicious criminal or vio lent causes, only 13,000 are officially recognized as murders, Hall said. THE DRINKING WATER dant lobster-like crayfish of the waters in that vicinity. The fish eries concern has a store on the island where refined foods are available and the children can get candy etc. and the company's ship calls regularly to bring sup plies and take the canned fish to Capetown. Thus commercializ ation marks the end of the unique experiment. One blessing remains despite commercialization the pure water flowing from the high na tural reservoir (crater of an ex tinct volcano) will continue to be naturally fluorlnated even though the diet of Tristan peo ple becomes as "refined" as the diet of people whose teeth are notoriously bad English and American people. Women-al-Work Not Ljked by Vets Sydney, Australia (U.R) When it comes to taste In paint ings, sick ex-servicemen least like pictures of women at work, the Red Cross art library here found. The library has been circulat ing prints of well known paint ings in ex-servicemen's hospitals for the last three years. The sick veterans not only re ject paintings depicting women at work, the library reports, but also paintings with sad and sor rowful women as the subject. "They almost unanimously prefer romantic pictures of wom en, such as the one in Rosetti's "Daydreams," one library work er said. Ask Domestic Scones Paintings of domestic, scenes by early Dutch painters, such as "The Fish Shop," are also in great demand. Extremely modem and con troversial paintings interest war neurosis patients, who invariably form discussion groups, the li brary worker said. "Patients confined to bed for long periods become hyper-critical of details in a painting and anything suggesting physical dis abilities tend to irritate them," the worker added. The Red Cross Art Library Is considered by its members to have immense value, not only from the cultural aspect, but as a form of healing therapy.
