TWO MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Monday. May S. 1952 United Nations Forces Surpass Reds in Total Plane Strength Edilor'i not: Tha writer of Shis dispatch is director of for eign services for the United Press. He has just returned from a flying trip to Japan during which he obtained an exclusive interview with the commander of the U.S. Far Eastern Air Force. It presents the inside story of how the air war is going in Korea. By WENDEL BURCH Control of the air over North Korea rests with the United Na tions Forces, Lt. Gen. O. P. Wey land, Commanding General of the United States Far East Air Force, indicated in an exclusive interview with this correspond ent in Tokyo. 1 "While the North Koreans and Chinese now have between 1,500 and 1,700 planes, of all types op erating in Korea, and while they have more M1G-15 type fighters than I have F 86 s, we outnumber them by far in total plajic strength," he said. Can Go Anywhere 'We can and do go anywhere we want. The enemy can go one place only MIG alley in north ern Korean. He could pull a few surprise raids, but our offensive component is in day and night operation. "We can fly an average of 800 to 1,200 sorties daily. The Navy runs an additional 175 to 200. The enemy averages less than 200 sorties a day, although at times he may set up 300 to 400. "The Russians have concen trated on defensive fighters, but we have lots of others. We have offensive power they don't have." Losses Replaced Slowly He reported that the commu nists seem to be replacing their plane losses more slowly than formerly, and their aggressive ness in offering and accepting nlr mmhnt him decreased. Their rail traffic has been cut to a trickle. They have no spot ter planes. They attempt no at tacks on U.N. ground forces or installations; and they have only one operational air field in the whnlp of North Korea. It is at Sinuiji, opposite Antung on the Yalu river. Only a few obsolete Yak type planes have been ob served there, and the base is bombed occasionally by U.N. planes. Results Justify Decision for high speed," the general said. rne results seem to justuy our Hnpicinn Th Nnrlh Knronn ni. ton engine air force simply couinn i siauu up agaiuM uui Jets." I asked the general why the TT W nlana InnKi aam In pyrnnH those of the Communists week after week. "In the first place, we an nounce losses due to all kinds of causes air combat, ground fire, accident and non-return," he re plied. "The Communists disclose none of thcir's and we can count only those planes shot down in air combat. "Secondly, we are flying many, many more missions and sorties than they do. "Thirdly, our main effort has been directed against their ground defenses, and they have built these up very heavily in the last year. They have brought in large numbers of automatic weapons, and have installed them around bridges, munitions dumps, supply points and other vital targets." ' Communist success in bringing down U.N. planes with ground fire results from the strength of their ground defenses, he indi cated, plus the fact that so much of our air effort is hurled direct ly against those defenses. The future track star has not been named as yet. Got any suggestions? Certainly are a number of de pressing films currently being shown. Last night I saw "The Blue Veil." This featured Jane Wyman in one of her grim, prim portrayals. Jane played a kind of a glorified baby sitter. She kept changing Jobs and changing hats. She certainly had a lot of hats for a baby sitter. She' added to the grimness of her portrayal by wearing these hats flat on her head. Will somebody please tell me why women wear hats flat on their heads? As I have frequently stated, wearing a hat that way makes even a beautiful, brown eyed honey blonde look like a case of slightly arrested develop ment. Also Ran Have you read that book by Irving Stone titled, "They Also Ran," which bears the sub-title, "The Story of the Men Who Were Defeated for the Presi dency?" Among the "also rans" were four generals: Winfield Scott, John Charles Fremont, G. B. McClelland and Winfield Scott Hancock. Winfield Scott, one of the greatest soldiers in United States history, ran for President Just 100 years ago. His opponent, Franklin Pierce, was described by R. H. Dana as "a third rate county politician." Pierce turned out to be a tenth rate President. Spent most of his time in office trying, by a va riety of means, to pave the way for his reelection. Fremont was defeated by the bachelor Presi dent, James Buchanan. McClel- lan lost to Lincoln and Hancock to Garfield. Husbands Alarm. d The members of the Husbands Protective Association view with much alarm a type of contest re cently held at Cobb's Corner Res taurant, Lexington Ave., Man hattan. This was a "roller pin throwing contest" for women. The contestants threw rolling pins at an effigy marked hus band." A Brooklyn matron was the winner. She scored eight di rect hits In ten throws. "It s all In fun," she commented. "The only thing I ever throw at my husband is a kiss." The husbands present, however, were not com pletely convinced of the lady's sincerity. Passing By Edgar Kaiser. Automotive In- dustry executive. In common with J. Edgar Hoover he likes the name of Edgar. I am still opposed to that name and will continue to conceal my connec tion wun it with the initials "E. V." To me Edgar as a name is in the same class as Pcrcival, Clarence and Montmorency. This reminds me I have Just learned I have a reader in Edgar, Neb. They even give towns that name. It must have something, but I can't see it. . . . Jane Russell, generously proportioned cinema performer. She has twenty-five sweaters In her wardrobe, but her current film titled, "Macao," is the first in which she has worn that type of garment. I wonder if the incidental music to this film Includes that ditty called, "You Look Sweeter In a Sweater." Asking Queries from clients. Q. Ball players usually talk a big fight with umpires. Rut have you ever seen a major league ballplayer actually punch an umpire in the jaw? A. I didn't see it. But Sher wood Magee, an outfielder for the Phillies, once hit an umpire named Finnrgan in the Jaw and knocked him flat. Magee was suspended for a year. Those Ex.rclses As I told you, seventy-elght- year-old T. R. Togna, of London, can run 100 yards in 15 seconds. He has the blood pressure of a man of 40. He is truly a physical marvel. He attributes his remark able health to some exercises he does in the bathtub. Medical men who have checked these exercises have been favorably impressed. Togna has written a book de scribing his bathtub activities titled, "Exercises in the Bath." So if you're in your seventies and want to run 100 yards in 15 seconds or accomplish some comparable physical feat you better get a copy. Get It Right It was George Whiting, not Jack Whiting, who collaborated with Irving Berlin on that hi larious ditty of yesteryear titled "My Wife's Gone to the Coun try, Hurrah! Hurrah! They fol lowed it with a sequel titled "I Love My Wife, But, Oh, You Kid!" Both Irving and George were bachelors at the time, which was all for the best. These songs were very popular with married men of the period. Need le to say, the wives were not amused. They found the ditties too great a strain on their sense of humor. Representative Named Wallowa County Judge Salem (U.R) Gov. Douglas McKay said Saturday he has appointed State Rep. Dean B. Erwin of Enterprise as county judge for Wallowa county. Rep. Erwin, who is not seeking re-election to the s,tate legisla ture, succeeds J. L. Staggs as Wallowa county judge. Staggs recently resigned because of ill health. TOO OPTIMISTIC $1,0,000 Howell, Mich (U.R) The sleeve of HarryHanover's sheep skin coat caught fire as he was attending his furnace. He hung the coat up after he thought he had put the fire out. A short time later the house burned down with an estimated loss of $10,000. Auks .and murres lay but a single egg; hummingbirds, two; robins, three to five; grouse, eight to 15.
