Communist May Day cele brations went off on schedule, but, except for Tokyo, with little fireworks. Demonstrations in such potential trouble spots as Paris and Rome were orderly. East Berlin Communists could muster only some 10,000 youths to challenge West Berlin police. 6 o m e 300,000 demonstrators clashed with police in Tokyo, resulting in death and injury, but probably more out of ex uberance over national inde pendence than widespread Red sympathies. Ridgeway Choice Welcomed 2. North Atlantic Treaty na tions welcomed the appointment of Gen. Matthew B. Ridgway to succeed Gen. Dwight Eisenhower as supreme commander in Eu rope. The combination of battle- wise Ridgway with uen. Aitrea M. Gruenther, an organizational genius, as his chief of staff, was regarded as just about the strongest team the United States could wield in the effort to build up Western Europe's defense.' - against Communism. b 3. The Yugoslav Communist party at odds with the Comin form said the Yugoslav army Is being strengthened to resist "the aggressive pressure of Russia ano her satellites. Premier Marshal Tito said that, if attacked, Yugo slavia would increase its army to 2,000,000 men. He said Yugo slavia would not join the At lantic Pact but would be on the side of peaceful nations. THE BAD 1. Prime Minister Daniel F. Malan imported 250 police rein forcements from Capetown as the Union of South Africa Par liament continued its stormy de bate over legislation which would take away from the courts their right to rule on constitu tionality of laws. Sentiment over Malan's fight to ram his "Jim Crow" policies into law despite the courts was at fever pitch but had not yet really boiled over into violence. However, it could at any time. 2. Western Europe was having its annual case of jitters. Soviet ground troops were on maneu vers in East Germany and the Soviet Air Force was holding exercises along the route of the neutral air corridors out of Ber lin to West Germany. Contribu- ins to the state of nerves was the fact that two Red MIG jets riddled an Air France passenger Diane en route from Berlin to Frankfurt, wounding three per sons. The Reds claimed the plane had strayed from the corridor. Conference Demands Increase 3. There were Increasing de-1 mands for some sort of a four-; power conference over a peace treaty for a unified Germany. The demands came not only from the Germans but also from such quarters as the British Labor party. The demands probably will not delay initialing of the agreement bringing West Ger-! many into the family of West European nations, but might de lay indefinitely its formal ap proval by the Parliaments in volved. The court said Friday the, re call petitions did not establish legal grounds for such a recall. The commissioners had pro posed that Cascade Locks pur chase the Bridge of the Gods over the Columbia river. The structure presently is owned by the Wauna Toll Bridge company. Kecall petitions had charged commissioners Ray Mallicott, G. M. Hesgard and L. L. Amoth with inefficiency. Swartz as super visor of the program. Swartz, formerly with the Stamats Publishing company, has also had wide experience in business analysis, market re search and public relations. In addition, Hight said, the agency's staff will be increased by about 50 per cent within the next six months. In addition, an expanded sales program of homes, commercial and indus trial properties will be started, with other public service iea tures, including propery and farm management services. Olson, 63, Molalla logger was killed Friday afternoon while working with his son on a log ging operation near Meadow- brook, Clackamas County Coro ner Ray Rilance said Saturday. With 42.4 per cent of the eli gible firms getting the lowest tax- rate of .3 per cent the av erage Is 1.16 per cent much lower than ever before, the com mission noted. And 10,162 em ployers contributing to the state's unemployment insurance pro gram this year will save nearly 15 million dollars. Based on last year's pay rolls, unemployment taxes will run a little more than 11 million in 1952, lowest with one possible exception since 1941.
