About River Dam
Further word on a conference
yesterday in Washington, D. C.
regarding Savage Rapids dam
was given In a telegram received
late yesterday by The Mall Trib
une from Sen. Wayne Morse.
He reported that the confer
ence was between Secretary of
the Interior Oscar Chapman,
Reclamation Commissioner
Michael Strauss, Victor Boelil
president of the Grants Pass Ir
rigation district, William John-
ion, and the senator.
They presented the case for
rehabilitation of the dam, in
cluding repair of the undercut
of the north wing, and installa
tion of fish screens. The district
has applied for a loan for the
rehabilitation, and a grant for
the fish screens.
Would Hav. Delayed
Morse said a previous ruling
of the secretary of the Interior
on the Rogue River project
would have required two or
three years of delay on the dam
work, but that at the close of
the conference, Chapman agreed
that the dam project should be
considered separately from the
liver project, thus saving two
or three years which would have
been required by further field
studies.
Morse emphasized that much
work remains to be done be
fore the repair program for the
dam is authorized and approved.
But "this morning we won our
first round by obtaining favor
able decision from Chapman on
procedure for handling further
consideration of project by bu
reau of reclamation," Morse concluded.

in Brooklyn and worked on the
vaudeville stage at the age of
six.
After years pf knocking
around, he wound up in movie
town as a struggling actor.
One day he was playing base
ball with some other young act
ors when a new first baseman
named Jerry Lewis arrived on
the scene.
"Jerry was clowning and I
laughed at him," says Danny.
"He knew a good audience when
he heard one. After the game
he asked me to come over to
his house and have some fun.
Asked to Lunch
"The next day he called and
asked me to have lunch at Para
mount with him. He called again,
too. After a while I was over
there almost every day. He
played jokes on me, like telling
the studio cop T was an auto
graph hound and having me
tossed over the fence.
"One day I got a phone call
from Chicago. It was Jerry. He
said to come on back and he'd
get me enough work on his tele
vision show to pay my expenses.
I went, and the upshot was
I went on to New York with
them and stayed with them on
tour for five and a half months."
Butt of Jokes '
Since then Danny has been the
only "regular" player on the
Martin & Lewis television shows.
Dean and Jerry pummel Danny
with props and pour water over
his head. Lewis broke Danny's
hand and dashed powder in his
eyes during one slapstick bit..
'Once Jerry and I went shop
ping for golf clubs and he was
going to surprise me with a new
golf bag. He swung a nine iron
and knocked me cold. They took
four stitches over my eye.
"And that was my day off! he
laughed.
To Danny this punishment is
paradise because "I like Jerry a

Sailor Beware." And Jerry as
signed Danny as chief writer and
cutter of t lie Lewis home movies. :
Drives Fancy Car
Now Danny drives a Cadillac i
convertible and lives in a fancy
apartment. He wears a silver
identification bracelet engraved
from Jerry and his wife. I
I'm over at Jerry's house a
lot, sometimes every day." he
says. "It's like home to me. And '
Jerry and his wife and Tony
Curtis and Janet Leigh are like '
brothers and sisters to me. I
'Sometimes." he savs. "I got
worried that I'm Just a stooge to .
Dean and Jerry. But 1 want to .
be a director some day."
