Matthews, dickering for a bout with light heavyweight king Joey Maxim, is a heavy favorite to defeat Kaplan, and Pep launching another in a series of comebacks also is favored to dispose of the less experienced Gonzales. The top New York bout pus Vince Martinez, promising Pat terson, N. J., youngster against veteran Tony Pellone of New York in a 10-roundcr at St. Nicholas arena Friday night. Gardnar Mulloy Wins River Oaks Houston. Tex. (U.R) At the age of 39. court veteran Gard nar Mulloy moved himself back into the middle of the national tennis picture with five titles in his last seven tournaments, The long-time star from Mi ami, Fla., added the River Oaks tourney crown to his string Sun day bv defeating former nation al champion Art Larsen of San Leandro. Calif., in the final round. 6-3, 3-6, 3-61 6-1, 6-4. Mill loy then teamed with Dick Sa vitt to win the doubles title. Padres Start Week at Top Of Coast League Standings San Francisco (U.R) Harry Truman isn't going to run. Nei ther, it appears, are some of the baseball teams in the Pacific Coast league. San Diego and Los Angeles, particularly, are killing each other with kindness, albeit fiym great distances. The Padres, with swaggering Lefty O'Doul in charge of their niblicks, started the week lead ing the PCL by half a game. In six outings against Hollywood, they dropped four but stepped out in front by a full game. This paradox occurred because the second-place Angels won only one of five from Portland. Tighten Standings While the Pads and Angels were doing their courteous curt sies from Portland to Holly wood. San Francisco, the Stars and the bold Beavers scurried along with monkey wrenches to tighten up the standings. Entering the fifth week of play, the biggest puzzles along the circuit are Oakland and Seattle, prepicked to slug.it out for the title. The Oaks are in sixth place; the Suds seventh. Their twin bill, as the one be tween Los Angeles and Port land, was discouraged by rain.. Hollvwood and ban Diego shared victories. So did the Seals and Sacramento. The Stars won, 6-2, then lost, 5-3. San Francisco, as was its custom against tne Sacs, came late with much to win, 6-5, but showed little in the second tilt, leasing, 5-2. The Seals took the series, 8-2. THE 1.1NESCORES: 1st Oame) San Diego 000 002 000 S 0 Hollywood .... 300 003 OOx 7 0 Olsen, Bowman 17) and Summers; Lindell and Sanclock.
