I t SIX MEDrORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE In the Day's By FRANK JENKINS Interesting possibly quite significant new: At his nress conference In Washington Thursday, President Truman was asked this question: "It it Is proper to seize the steel mills, can you, in your opin ion. SEIZE THE NEWSPAPERS AND RADIO STATIONS?" MR. TRUMAN replied that under similar circumstances the President of the United States has to act for whatever is best for the country. "That," he said to the reporter who had asked him the question, "is the answer to your inquiry." His reply raises this further question: In such a case, WHO WOULD BE THE JUDGE as to what was best for the country? Why, the PRESIDENT would be the JudRel Just as President Peron was the judge in a case when It seem ed TO HIM that it was "best" for Argentina to seize the great newspaper La Prensa which had consistently opposed Peron. THIS Is the point I'd like to mnlro- President Truman's answer to the reporter's question reveals his conviction that this has be come A GOVERNMENT OF MEN and Is no longer a govern ment of laws. History tells us plainly that when ANY nation reaches that point the liberties of its people are endangered. I SUPPOSE you expect me as a publisher to explode with indignation at this suggestion that my newspaper might be tak en away from me by the govern ment. I shall do no such thing. As a newspaper publisher, I am a pri vate business man. All my adult life, I have done business In a free private enterprise system. In a free private enterprise sys tem, ALL business men face and accept the risk of losing their businesses. If they mis Judge conditions and go too deeply Into debt and are unable to pay their bills, THEIR CREDI TORS TAKE OVER and they are out. That is Inherent In the lystem. In a free private enterprise system, business men accept ALL risks including the risk that the SYSTEM WILL CHANGE. No one can guarantee that ANY system will endure forever. Britain was long a free enterprise country. So was Ger many. So was Italy. SO WAS ARGENTINA. But In all of them the system changed. In all of them, private business men have seen their properties taken over by the government, for one reason or another. There was nothing they could do about It. It was Just one of the risks they accepted when they went into business for themselves. go- If the system changes in America, I'll Just have to put up with it and take the conse quences. I'll protest, of course, but In the end I'll have to say to myself that It was one of the risks I had to accept when I went Into business. Logger, Attorney Warned by Deputy Portland (U.B Sam D. Alexander, Gold Beach logger, and his attorney wore warned Monday that they were "plead ing themselves into a criminal case." The warning was made by U. S. Deputy District Attorney Ed ward Twining during hearing of a motion by Alexander to Inter vene in the government's suit to void the sale of 800 acres of Indian-owned land near Gold Beach. Alexander's attorney, Robert L. Weiss, argued his client had an option to buy the valuable timber before the Portland area office of the Indian bureau sold It to Mrs. Ernestine Slnlscal of Siletz. On the same day that Mrs. Slniscnl bought the tract for $135,000, she was said to have sold 11 to Mr. and Mrs. Henry B. Tnvlor of The Dalles for $160,000. Alexander claimed Mrs. Slnls cnl's father, Elmer Reed, also of Siletz, agreed to buy the tract and was then to sell it to Alex ander for $12,500 profit. It was this arrangement, Twin ing warned, which might make Alexander subject to criminal penalties. The SinlscalTaylor transaction is the basis of the government suit to set aside the sale. The Grange Snmnni Grinol Jackson county Pomona Grnngo will meet Saturday, April 26, at 10 a.m. in Lake Creek Grange hall. All resolu tions should be presented at this meeting Chaplain Kathleen Scovnll will hffvc charge of memorial services. Members are to take salad or dessert for dinner. News SO MUCH for the newspaper owner. But what of the public If the newspapers are taken over by the government? jTET'S put it this way: Newspapers, under private ownership, are not perfect. We all make mistakes. Some of us are biased and intolerant. But We are all in competition with each other. In the small cities, we compete with the newspapers from larger communities that enter our towns. We compete with the radio, with television, with the magazines. And all of these media compete with each other. We all try to tell all the news and to tell it first so that we will mnke a good showing in com parison with our competitors. That is inherent in the free pri vate enterprise system. WHAT if the government takes over the newspapers? Well, In that event, you will read in the newspapers ONLY WHAT GOVERNMENT WANTS YOU TO READ. That and no more. Another thought: If government takes over the newspapers, it will have to take over radio- and television and the magazines. It will, have to go whole hog or none. It has been that way in Russia under communism. It was that way in Germany under Hitler. It was that way in Italy Under Musso lini. It HAS to work that way. IF THE newspapers were taken over by the government, their owners would be out. And injured. They would suffer, of course. But the public would suffer MORE, for without free news papers there would be no free news. There would be only the news that government wants the people to know. Without free news, there can be no liberty. That is the long and the short of it. Don't place damp furs near radiators . . shake them gently and allow them ot dry slowly at normal room temperature. 2. Don't hang furs In crowded, hot closets jammed between other articles of clothing. Allow plenty of room around your fur coats. 3. Don't brush furs viglr'ously or stroke them too briskly. Friction from rubbing actually singes fur hair. i DO 1. Do avoid unnecessary strains on your furs. Before you sit or stratch see that furs are unbuttoned and loose fitting. 2. Do hang your furs properly when not In use. Use a fitted hanger and place in a well ventilated closet away from direct sunlight. 3. Do be careful of the things you wear or carry near your furs.
