Roosevelt Honored By 200 Democrats A! Saturday Dinner "Franklin Roosevelt' great ness lay not so much in what he gave as what he inspired in oth ers. His force was more spiritual than physical and it was world wide. He had the unique ability to give the common man every where faith in himself. And the heritage he left was a blueprint for world peace the lesson that along with liberty and equality there must be true fraternity." This was the message deliver ed by David C. Shaw, Gold Beach attorney, who gave the Roosevelt Memorial dinner ad dress at the Medford hotel Sat urday evening. Also speaking at the dinner, which was attended by close to 200 local and upstate Democrats and some Republicans, were Dr. Arthur Kreisman of Southern Oregon college who spoke for Sen. Estes Kefauver, and Pete Soderlund, SOC student debater and recent mock UN assembly delegate who spoke for Gov. Ad lai Stevenson. Other Speakers Candidates who gave brief talks were Francis Lambert who seeks the nomination for state treasurer; Dr. Louis Wood, one of the two seeking the Demo cratic nomination for the. Fourth district congressional seat; Mon roe Sweetland, present Demo cratic National committeeman, and Mike DeCicco, rivals for the head party post; Mrs. Margaret Cawood, one of the two running for Democratic National commit teewoman, all of Portland, and Lee Chance, Grants Pass, run ning for district delegate to the Democratic National convention. . Local candidates attending were Lloyd Whitney and Charles Hockersmith, rivals for nomina tion as county commissioner, and Ralph Sweeney, seeking re election as county treasurer. Andy Hawver, candidate for nomination as county assessor, unable to attend, was represent ed by Dr. Kreisman. Taft Begins Drive For Home State Voles Ashtabula, O. U.RJ Sen. Robert A.' Taft opened his home state drive Monday for all 56 delegates to the Republican na tional convention in the May 6 primary by continuing his attack on President Truman's seizure of the steel industry. Accused Murderess Fails Suicide Try Portland (U.J9 Mrs. Zad Z. Kader, accused of killing her three-year-old daughter, Sherrie, and throwing her body into a sump pit last January, failed in a suicide attempt Sunday night! the sheriff's office reported. Officers said Mrs. Kader. was found in the bathroom of the county jail with a cord from her bathrobe around her neck and scratches on her wrist. Sheriff Terry Schrunk said Mrs. Kader had used a broken razor blade to slash her wrist but that the wound bled only slightly. Mrs. Kader, 21, had written a long note maintaining her inno cence and accusing law enforce ment officials and newspapers of persecuting her. She is awaiting trial for iirst degree murder. Britain's Hew Jet Transport Tested London U.P.) Britain's four Jet passenger airliner, the "Comet," flew from London to Rome Monday in two hours and 17 minutes on its last test flight before opening the Jet passenger air transport age May 2. The British Overseas Airways plane arrived at Ciampino Air port at 11:05 a.m. Bnd was sched uled to make the return flight to London later in the day. On May 2 the 480-mile-an-hour jet craft will leave London Air port on a 8,274-mile flight to Johannesburg, carrying a full payload of 36 passengers.
