Police at Milton - Freewater Harbinger By J. HUGH PRUETT Astronomer, ExtenHlon Division Oregon Higher EducaUon System When we consider that star light is so faint that darkness is needed for its visibility to the unaided eye, it hardly seems possible that a single bright star could be the source of the Illumi nation of a considerable area of a large American city. Yet this is exactly what occurred on one occasion for a star now in our eastern evening sky. Arcturus brilliantly lighted the immense Century of Progress exposition on the opening evening, May 27J 1933 Forty years earlier another great world's fair, the Colum bian exposition, also had been held in Chicago. At the fair of 1893, one of the interesting ex hibits was part of the huge 40 inch telescope, soon to be set up at Yerkes observatory. Astronomical Slant When the exposition of 1933 was being planned, Dr. E. B. Frost of Yerkes noted that an other "40" was much in evi dence. The light from the star Arcturus, flashing through space at 186,300 miles per second, re quired 40 years to reach us. This meant that radiation which left Arcturus during the first ex position would arrive during this second similar event. Why not give an astronomical slant to the occasion even let the 40-inch telescope participate? Dr. Frost's well-prepared plan was accepted by the exposition managers. On the opening eve ning an impressive ceremony was held in the open air court of the Hall of Science, where crowds were assembled. After music by the Chicago Symphony orchestra, Dr. Frost made a fit ting address, explaining the un usual feat Immediately to be at tempted. He ceased speaking Suspense reigned. Signal Flashed A signal is flashed to Yerkes observatory 80 miles away. A wide area of "old light" from Arcturus strikes the huge tele scopic lens and is tunneled down the tube and at the lower end is focused to a brlliant spot on a photoelectric cell. There the concentrated light is 40,000 times more luminous than the star appears to the naked eye This generates a feeble electri cal current which greatly ampli tied In other circuits, speeds to the eager throng in Chicago. Switches automatically operate and motors begin to hum. Now the great doors are opening as if by unseen hands. Suddenly spotted the warden's car aban doned near an orchard. Chief Bo Dunston and Walla Walla coun ty Deputy Sheriff Leonard Krika found Smith and Lloyd lying on their backs beneath an apple tree. The two trusties offered no resistance. Unfortunately, Warden Cranor could not sympathize with the errant prisoners. He gave them two weeks in solitary confinement to shake off their spring fever. of Spring thousands of incandescent lights flash into full brilliance. Star light has opened the great ex position. Telescopes Stand By To be more sure of success should clouds interfere at Yerkes, large telescopes "stood by" at Harvard and the Univer sities of Illinois and Pittsburgh. At only one of the four cooper ating stations was the sky over cast. . Arcturus, still noted because of this event, can be seen to night whenever the sky is clear. By 8 p.m. it is very high almost due east and is the only bright star in that section of the sky. It is decidedly orange in color. You will surely want to form the acquaintance of this famous har binger of spring. Wall Street New York (U.R) Prices moved within a narrow range on the stock exchange in one of the dullest Saturday trading sessions in more than two years. Dealings throughout the two hour session were conducted on a highly restricted basis. The reporting tickers stood idle for minutes at a time. There was nothing in the news to snap the market out of its lethargy. Investors generally held to the sidelines pending de velopments in wage-price dis pute in the steel industry. "As a volunteer fire group, the Jacksonville department cannot leave town," the mayor said. "At present we have a new 750-gal-lon tank truck with a high pres sure pump and an old truck with a 250-gallon tank which is not up to state specifications. If a dis trict was formed outside of town, a new truck would have to be added. Definitely Restricted "Our fire department is, at present, definitely restricted," he continued, "because our current insurance is no good outside the city limits. This is why we can't answer calls which come from rural areas." Mayor Hackert pointed out that if a rural district is organ ized, and buys its service from the city, it would make possible the new equipment and perman ent manpower which w o ul d make insurance coverage possi ble in rural areas and give "bet ter service both without and Huge Blast Scheduled At Columbia Dam Site The Dalles (U.R) Between 40 and 50 tons of dynamite will be set off at the site of The Dalles dam on the Columbia river here Sunday in one of the biggest blasts ever to be fired in the Pacific Northwest. Hubert Elder, resident engi neer, said the exact time for the explosion had not been deter mined but announced that high way traffic on U. S. 30 and trains on the Union Pacific rail road along the construction site three miles east of The' Dalles would be halted temporarily. Residents were expected to line hilltops and nearby roads to witness the blast. CAN A PERSON GO TO WHO HAS NEVER Harold E. Regarding rural water sup plies, the mayor said it would be possible to bulldoze out sump holes which could fill at least one tank at a time and would be stationed at regular intervals. Could Use Tankers "Another method," he added, "would be to acquire a spare tank truck of 1,000-gallon capac ity similar to Central Point's. It would be possible to use our present 250-gallon truck by con verting it to a larger tank size." In commenting on the pro posed enlargement of the Med ford district to be discussed at a meeting next Tuesday at the Jackson school in Medford, May or Hackert expressed hope that the Medford district boundary would not be moved "any far ther west as it would decrease the Jacksonville district's tax base and make it more dificult to secure the needed changes."
