For Instance vitamin D Is essential for the normal assim ilation, utilization and retention of calcium, but if the two are In contact for a considerable time the vitamin D potency deterior ates. So the calcium salts are In closed in one capsure, and after that has been sealed in a gelatin coat the vitamin D is added as an outer coat and the whole in rinsed In a surface coat. Thus the calcium and D come into contact only after the capsule is swallowed. In the past ten years I have smoked many pipefuls over the question of the analgesic (pain killer) value of calcium. At first it was purely and simply a pipe dream. I don't remember pre cisely what started it, but prob abily it was the frequency of re ports from readers who had ex perienced relief of such ache or pain from calcium not from a dose or two but from increased daily Intake of calcium over a period of weeks or months. Neuralgia, neuritis, "nervous" headache, periodic sick headache (migraine), rheumatli and other ailments for which people in dulge recklessly in dangerous analgesics (pain killers) such as aspirin, acetanilid, phenarctin or various nostrums containing these drugs in disguise, are all good "indications," as doctors say, for calcium and D. April 17. 1951 As We Live JEALOUSLY MAY LEAVE MARK ON PERSONALITY (Q) My 5-year-old daugh ter Is very Jealous of her baby brother. She has been Jealous of him ever since he was born, nearly two years ago. My husband tells me she will outgrow It but it seems to be getting worse rather than bet ter. She Is like a changed child since her little brother came. What would you ad vise me to do?" Mrs. R. O. (A) Take prompt action to cure your daughter of her jealously. You have already noticed changes in her p e r s o n a lity These changes will become stronger as she grows older unless the cause is cured. It is up to you arid your husband to see that your Dr. Hurlock dau g h t e r re ceives as much love as her baby brother. Of course he requires more of your time and atten tion than your daughter does but, at the same time, you must never let her feel that he is your favorite. That is what causes most children to be jealous. Make your daughter feel se cure In your love. Give her a reasonable amount of your time, have her help you with the care of the baby, and treat her as if she were your age rather than her own age. Will Ruin Personality Unless you counteract the feelings of insecurity that have developed since her baby broth er's birth, her whole personality will be ruined. When a child feels Insecure, she will lose con fidence in herself, will become dependent upon other people, and may even develop a revenge ful attitude toward everyone. This pattern is not the type that will make the child popular at any age. But, unfortunately, it does not work out that way. The whole personality of a child is colored and distorted by jealousy and this produces a lifelong effect.
