There would be no First Lady unless the 54-year-old Geor gian follows the lead of the last bachelor President, Grover Cleveland, who married In 1886 during his first term. He has a bevy of them in his own family. First, there's his mother, 84-year-old Mrs. Ina Dillard Rus sell who lives In the Russell family home at Winder, Ga. Mrs. Russell has been mostly con fined to ';ier home since she broke her hip four years ago but the senator reports she is Vin good health and good spir its." In 1950, she was Georgia's "Mother of the Year." "I propose to bring mother up to live with me if I am elected." Russell says. Was Official Hostess Mrs. Russell was her son's official hostess when he was governor of Georgia in the early 1930 s and he brags, "she still knows more about running a house than any woman I know." Mrs. Russell probably would be his hostess for state dinners but she could not be expected to preside at the huge state recep tions. Welfare and Mass Care Planned Here By CD, Red Cross Local and state Red Cross and civilian defense officials met Tuesday in an effort to organ ize welfare and mass care pro grams for Jackson county, ac cording to Mrs. Blanche Lyman, deputy director of CD aid and welfare for the county. The meeting resulted in the establishment of a training pro gram for all local county chap ter disaster workers during the last two weeks of May, either from the 19th to the 23rd or 26th to 28th, Mrs. Enid Rankin, executive secretary for the coun ty Red Cross chapter, reported. Mrs. Rankin pointed out that the final date is pending the avail ability of Mrs. Katharine Hall Chambers, disaster field repre sentative for the Red Cross, who will supervise the program. Tells Responsibility At a noon luncheon, Mrs. Chambers told local workers that "Red Cross is legally and morally responsible for meeting the 'humanitarian needs of peo ple in natural disaster." She stressed the need of local pre paredness and the importance of fund raising at this time since the Red Cross is faced with re habilitation for victims of two major disasters: a tornado in the south, and the present flood In the midwest and southern states. Mrs. Chambers worked from July through October in the Mis souri flood disaster and was then released to the Oregon civil de- fen s e commission to assist George E. Emlgh, Jr., of the state staff, In training for mass care in war-caused disaster. Groups to Cooperate , Robert Elliott, Medford, coun ty disaster head, tied in the Red Cross work with CD plans at the meeting. "Red Cross is also re sponsible for mass care in the CD plans," Elliott pointed out, "and my committee will coop erate to the fullest extent with the CD organization." Col. Charles Stafford, county CD head, described the position of mass care in the county plan and noted that authority followed from the director to deputy di rector for aid and welfare to the mass care section, which includes food, clothing and shelter. Bank Deposits Grow in Past Year Deposits in the Medford branch of the U.S. National bank as of March 31 totaled $15,151, 580, It was reported today by Allan T. Perry, manager. The report was in response to the call of the comptroller of the currency. Loans and discounts for the Medford branch were 8, 915,485, Perry said. Deposits throughout the state wide bank's branches were $576,- 137,335, an increase of more than $23,000,000 during the past year, and total resources stood at $624,312,364. The fortress of Sacsahuaman in Peru, which Is still standing, was built by the Inca Indians to guard Cusco, the leading city of the Inca realm. It was begun in 1438 and completed in 1508.
