By BERT REMCOUNTRE Ai Told to United Press Pierre, S. D. (U.R) The water first started to come Monday. We didn't believe It would be so high. They all told us it wouldn't go so high. We just didn't believe it. We went to bed Monday night and then something woke us up. It sounded just like the wind but it wasn't the wind, it was the water. We knew it was coming up fast and we started to get the stuff out. My wife and I and two boys took the bedding and cook ing utensils and some clothes out of the house and piled them up on a bank. Couldn't Get Back When we came back to get an other load, the water was so high we couldn't get back in. By that time it had come up so fast that it even took away the stuff wo stacked on the bank. We weren't so scared. But we Just couldn't believe it could come up so fast. Monday and Tuesday night we stayer with a neighbor. Then we had to move again and we got separated from him. Wednesday night we slept in the depot. Our whole house went down the river. Will Be Able To Eat Ail we got are the clothes on our backs and my job. With my Lincoln, Neb. (U.R) Denver Beetem, 22, had a costly day in court. He pleaded guiiiy to sev en complaints of speeding, mo tor vehicle registration and mak ing unnecessary noise. He was fined $107 but appealed. job at least we'll be able to eat when the water goes down. All I'm worrying about now is a place to stay. I worried about all our stuff for a while but that's all gone and it's no use to worry. We sure do feel bad about the boy's new bicycle. He just bought it and never even rode it. tie cried when it went down the river. I guess we feel as bad about that as anything. We were in the 1943 flood, but that wasn't so bad. All we lost was the groceries. This time it's different. They say there's not much use worrying but you can't help H when you don't have anything but the clothes on your back. Showing of Film Here Opens Rogue Valley's 1952 Soap Box Derby Approximately 100 boys and adults turned out last night at Barnes Chevrolet company here to see one of the first local show ings of "Winners All," official 1952 motion picture of the Ail American Soap Box Derby. Showing of the film here is sponsored by International Foot print association, Chapter 16, the Medford Kiwanis club, Barnes Chevrolet and The Medford Mail Tribune, which are also sponsor ing the 1952 Rogue Valley Soap Box Derby, to be held here this summer Tells Race Story The film, which Is narrated by Jimmy Stewart, stage and screen star, tells the story of the color ful races, parades, banquets, dis plays and the support of commu nities contributing to the derby program. "Winners AH" also tells and shows what the race and the kid-built racers looked like in 1934 and 1935, first years of the nationally famous event. It also Includes a running pic ture story of the 1951 All-'-"' :- can Soap Box Derby at Akron, O., from the moment the nisi champion arrives at the scene until the finale of the "Banquet of Champions after the race. The film has also been shown here at the Medford junior high school, and in two weeks is scheduled for additional show ings in the Medford area. Next week it will be shown to various groups in Ashland and Grants Pass, where other organizations are also taking part In sponsor ing the Rogue Valley Soap Box Derby. Rules Available Boys 11 to 15 years of age In clusive may enter the Rogue Valley Derby by contacting der by officials at Barnes Chevrolet. Copies of the 1952 official rules are also available at the firm. Students accompanied by their parents will be given application blanks and derby driver's licenses. Derby officials that boys enter the event as soon as possible. They point out that early builders have more time to perfect their designs, plan de tails and construct their cars more carefully. A soap box derby car must be built, without adult help, by the boy who races it. They may receive advice from their parent, school manual training teachers or from older boys. However, they must not allow anyone to construct any part of the car. A few changes have, been made in the official rules this year, sponsors of the event state. The cost limit has been increased to $10, but this figure must in clude everything except the price of the ready-made wheel and axle set. The local prize list is headed by the T. H. Keating plaque, awarded by the general manager of the Chevrolet Motor division. Valuable merchandise awards also are given to local winners and the champion receives an all expense trip to Akron, where he will represent the Rogue valley in the AU-American Soap Box Derby. The national champion at Akron wins four-year $5,000 college scholarship. State Conference To Consider United Fund Campaigns Salem Problems of united fund campaigns will be consid ered at a meeting of the first an- n u a 1 state wide Community Chest conference to be held in Salem April 22, It was announc ed today by State Chest Presi dent Charles A. Sprague. Interest in unification of fund raieing appeals Is at a high pitch, Sprague pointed out, since near ly every community is plagued with a "veritable rash of drives" throughout the year. The program will also include workshop groups on laoor-man- agement cooperation in Chest ac tivities, campaign organization and techniques, budgeting pro cedure, public relations and so cial planning. Experts To Attend Members of the staff of Na tional Community Chests and Councils will attend, as will a number of Oregon leaders in the field of fund-raising and commu nity planning. All sessions will be held at the Marlon hotel, with registration at 9:30 a.m. The conference will be open to anyone interested, and invitations have been ex tended to all officers and direc tors of local community chests, chambers of commerce, labor leaders and many other groups and individuals. Sprague suggested that any community desiring to find a solution to the problem of mul tiple drives ought to send one or more representatives to the conference. Eureka Redwood Lumber Mill Sold Eureka, Cal. (U.R) Out right purchase by Eureka Red wood Lumber company of the 55-acre Pacific Lumber company mill here was announced by of ficials of both firms Thursday. Price was $4,500,000. The joint announcement was made by Eureka Redwood Presi dent Thomas B. Malarkey and A. S. Murphy, head of Pacific. The inventory Includes 17, 000.000 fete of lumber. Eureka is a subsidiary of the M and M Woodworking company of Portland, Ore., of which Ma- recommend larkey also is president. Junior Vegetable' Growers Contest Set Corvallis The 12th annual competition for a $8,000 scholar ship offered by the National Jun ior Vegetable Growers associa tion was declared open today by Ralph Clark, extension horticul turist of Oregon State college, state adult leader of the junior group. Farm youngsters of the state aged 12 to 21 years are eligible to compete if they have had at least one year of garden project work. Last year youngsters in 44 states competed for the awards, donated by A and P stores. The contest has the sanction of the Grange, the 4-H organization and the Future Farmers of America.
