Sam Chapman, a Major league star for more than a decade, played the first minor league game of his life last week. An Ail-American football player end a basebal lstar at the University of California, he was rocketed immediately after graduation to an outfield berth with the Phila delphia A's. This season Chapman wanted so strongly to play baseball in the bay area, he refused to re port to the Cleveland Indians. Sam coveted a Job with San Francisco or Oakland, near his Greenbrae home. After drawn-out discussions, Chapman signed with Oakland. San Francisco owner Paul I. Fagan had rebuked Sam's de sire to play for his Seals thusly: "We don't want him. He can't help us." Chapman nearly made Fagan choke on his blunder Thursday night when the rangy outfielder cudgeled a prodigious ninth-inning homerun that tied the game at 1-1 and sent it into 10 panels the first overtime contest of the season. San Francisco won out in the 10th when Jimmy Moran, an ex Oak; singled home the tie break er. The result, 3-1 favoring the Seals, was a just reward for the fine pitching of Elmer Singleton. Sacramento came to life with a 7-2 decision over Portland in the only other PCL game Thurs day night. The Hollywood-Los Angeles and Seattle-San Diego affairs were rained out. At Sacramento, third sacker Bob Dillinger, an ex - Major league teammate of Chapman's, rapped out four singles to pace the Solons' win. Pitcher Bert Barkelew, an aging rookie from the Pioneer league, allowed only four hits in posting his second win. O'BRIEN PACES SEATTLE Moscow, Ida. But they don't have Brooklyn's power, speed or de fensive ability. St." Louis could be the dark horse. Manager Al Lopez Is confi dent the Indians will win, but they lost last season because they lacked power and because the left side of their infield made too many costly errors. But they figure to have the best pitching in the league again with the Big Four of Bob Feller, early Wynn, Mike Garcia and Bob Lemon and Lopez feels that Shortstop Ike Boone and Third Baseman Al Rosen have over come their shortcomings in the field. But the Yankees will take a lot of beating for in Allie Rey nolds, Vic Raschi, Ed Lopat and Sophomore Tom Morgan, miracle-man Casey Stengel also has all the pitching it takes. Seattle won the second tilt, 11-5. Basketball star Johnny O'Brien collected three hits in seven plate trips and took over Chief tain pitching chores in the sec ond game. Fast Start Seen For Athletics Philadelphia (U.R) The Phil adelphia Athletics, fastest finish ers in the American league last season, appeared set Friday for a fast start in the 1952 race. The Athletics returned home to prepare for their intra-city se ries with the Phillies opening Saturday after their most suc cessful barnstorming trip since the world championship team of 1930 won 13 of 16 games en route north. Including Thursday's 9-6 vic tory over the Greensboro Pa triots of the Carolina league, the Athletics had won 11 of their last 12 games the 12th game having ended in a tie.
