As you know, at Manhattan parades honoring homecoming or visiting celebrities much torn paper and confetti is tossed from windows. Record for such dem onstrations is held by Gen. Doug las MacArthur. At the parade in his honor last year 850 tons of paper were tossed. At General Eisenhower's parade 77 tons of paper were thrown. For Winston Churchill parade, 56 tons. Horses 8c Women At a recent dinner party a discussion dealing with the Duch ess of Windsor inspired a men tion of the romance of that other belle of Baltimore, Betsy Patter son, who married Prince Jerome Bonaparte, Napoleon's brother. "They met at a race track," I said. I heard a green-gray-eyed blonde whisper to another guest: "It's positively revolting. No matter what is being discussed that Durling brings a horse into it." I ignored the crack. Those green-gray-eyed blondes have never forgiven me for having our Horses & Women experts tell their husbands how to handle them. Betsy Patterson met Jer ome Bonaparte at the Govans race track in Baltimore. Betsy was beautiful and an heiress. Her father, William Patterson, was at that time the second richest man in the United States. The richest was another Marylander, Charles Carroll of Carrolton. Texas is an Indian word mean ing "Hail Friend." . . . Chicago is the fourth largest city in the world. Can you name the first three in the proper order? How about the fifth and sixth? . . . What restaurant currently oper ating in the U.S.A. has the larg est menu card? Von's restaurant in Seattle has a menu card which measures 9 inches by 12 inches. It lists 30 entrees. Are you an opera enthusiast? If to, how well informed art you on the subject? What open calls for the leading lady having un usually beautiful legs? It is "Der Rosenkavalier" by Richard Strauss. The composer wrote the opera for Mary Garden because of her beautiful legs. Or so he said. However. Mary never play ed it She was going to, but World War I intervened and all German operas were barred in Paris. It would seem an opera star with great pride in her volet might be offended if told an op era had been written for her be cause of her beautiful legs. But Miss Garden was quite pleased with the compliment Please Note It is constantly claimed little women prefer big men. That all cute, little tricks are wild to mar ry six-footers. The research of our Horses & Women experts does not confirm this. Many lit tle women prefer to marry men of similar height or just a little taller. Five feet seven seems the popular height for husbands among the .petite females. Inci dentally, that California widow with eight children who has re ceived so many proposals of mar riage is five feet two inches in height She has stated she would like to marry a man of about the same height I have heard it claimed that the smaller men make the best husbands. Not only that it has been asid they make better lovers. Briefly Query as to who played Char maine in the first film version of "What Price Glory" baffled many subscribers. It was none other than Dolores Del Rio. That part started her on her way to stardom. . . . Predictions by Nos trademus are being referred to again. Now it is said he predict ed war between "the bear and the eagle," interpreted to mean Russia and the U. S. A. He said the eagle would be the winner. Pasting By "Pudge" Heffelfinger. Foot ball immortal. He made Walter Camp's first selection of an all America football team. That was 63 years ago, in 1889, to be exact "Pudge" is now 85 years of age and in the pink. Plays a lot of golf. Note it stated that "pooling the tips" is "a European custom" and "never practiced" in this country. That's not right At most bars the bartenders pool their tips. However, the practice has never been popular among wait ers or waitresses, especially) waitresses. A waitress feels her "male appeal" has as much to do with the size of her tips as the service she gives. So a brown eyed honey blonde tray queen with a plentitude of "oomph" Around Hollywesd IV AUM MCtST Hollywood U Singer Stan Freberg sobbed Tuesday that Johnny Ray fans lust don't ? have a sense humor" be cause they're creaming mad over Freoenfs satire of the sweeping crooner. Ray, as de votees of the arts know by now, is the new AUao Mossy swoon boy who sobs such sad songs as "Cry." Freberg decided "to many sad songs come out of radios now they will find the sett have been corroded by tear." So he and composer Rudy Raskin dashed off a murderous satire. Try." Sun s record of it swept the country. On the platter he cries and gurgles, "Don't you know . . . nobody laughs it up no more . . . wipe off that smile and weep . . . it's real George to cry . . . don't be a snob ... tit down and sob . . . come on and taa-ry!" Plays Seasick Serpent Freberg's waded in hot water for his satire before. He plays Cecil the seasick serpent on "Time for Beany," a children's television puppet show. But he also records satirical tunes, such as his famous "John and Mar sha." This take-off on soap operas consisted of Freberg saying only "John . . . Marsha." The radio networks sniffed Innuendo and banned the tune. "AU I did was say two words," said Freberg. "I'm a nice boy who lives with his father who's minister in nice home in Pasadena. Have Dirt Minds "Mr father said whv did thev ban the song, son? I had to tell him a lot of people have dirty minds. It's banned in the whole city of Boston. They cant even sell the record.
