I don't remember what the secretaries and switch board operators were paid when I worked in downtown Manhat tan as a lad, I do know office boys were paid from $3 to $5 a week. The $5 a week lads were big shots. They took their girls to Coney Island on Saturday nights. Sidelight A promising candidate for president of the Borrowed Time club, is Col. J. C. Duwng Feature Syndicate, Inc.) are the bachelors most difficult to get into matrimonial harness? I once thought it was San Fran cisco. Now I think it is Pitts burgh. It was a group of Pitts burgh bachelorettes who origi nated the "We Wanna Get Mar ried Club." When I mentioned that there, were bachelors in Alaska seeking matrimonial mates, the greatest response came from Pittsburgh bachelor ettes. Recently I referred to a place in the Dutch West Indies where many high salaried bache lors are stationed in the employ of an American -oil company. Again the Pittsburgh bachelor ettes showed the most interest. If the Pittsburgh bachelors are not reluctant as to matrimony can it be that the bachelorettes of taht city are not well versed in the art of inspiring a propos al? Or is it possible the Pitts burgh bachelors do not measure up to what their city's bachelor ettes expect in a husband? I have asked our Mules & Men depart ment to thoroughly check the situation. When polio strikes, a victim has a good chance of escaping any paralysis. according to Dr. William A. Spencer. Spencer, medical director of the southwestern polio respira tory center at Houston, Tex., said here that 'if paralyzed, a victim also has a good chance of avoiding long-term confine ment in an iron lung. Spencer said that loughly 50 per cent of all polio cases com pletely escape paralysis. Of those with some degree of paralysis, he said, perhaps 10 or 12 per cent have any long term or res piratory problem. The medical director s optimis tic statements are based on ex perience at the center. He said only 40 of 320 respiratory pa tients treated there since June. 1950, have been serious iron lung cases. The dangers of Infantile par alysis have been well publi cized, Spencer said, but he thinks they have been too dramatically presented with the result that many people are unduly afraid of the disease. "People should remember,' he said, "that the automobile is still a greater community threat." a tictinonished alumnus of this college is that remarkable seal named "Sharkey." worth around 75 nnn. 1 saw "Sharkey" in a stage play in New York. As to the lines referring to the men who lingered about the windy corner of the Jlatiron Building in the yesteryear they are as follows: The devil sends the wicked wind. To blow the skirts knee high. But God is Just, he tends the dust. To close the bad man's eye. Best of Friends You know how those who are divorced often say, "But we are still the best of friends." There is a group of divorced people in Kansas City, Mo., who can say that and they won't be wrong. Yes, sir, in Kansas City there is a man and his wife and his three ex-wives all living happily to gether in the same house. Venus in the eastern dawn and Jupiter in the western twilight, have about gone in to hiding for a time. Venus, ris ing only about half an hour be fore the sun, and Jupiter, setting around the same time interval after sunset, are lost in the bril liance of this celestial luminary. We shall have to do without them for several weeks. The bright star Spica will be somewhat below it. On April 8 the big round moon will be above Saturn, but on the following evening it will be below this planet. By 10 p. m. or shortly after, red Mars, now quite bright and it will continue to brighten for nearly a month will have cleared the skyline in the southeast.
