EC3IG EOT LAKE WE SETTODAV Emigrant lake south of Ash land will churn with activity to day when outboard motorboat : racers from up and down the coast contend in a regatta start ing at 1:30 p.m. Sponsors said Saturday that as many as 70 boats may be en tered in the races. A number of name drivers will participate. Among them will be Harris Quade, Troutdale, commodore of the Oregon Out . board association; Viv Bull, Red ding, Calif.; Mel McGrew, Med iord, who holds the world's title of 54.2 miles per hour for D utility boats, and Harold Busley, Eugene, A utility record holder. Rocky Stone, well-known Wil lamina racer, may be here. There will be six events for men and one for women with two heats in each and possibly elimination races in some. Men's heats will be five laps and women's five. Hydroplanes, run abouts and utility boats will be entered. A good representation of lo- Eagles Win Loop Opener Eagle Point Eagle Point high won its JDJ-league baseball opener here on Friday, defeating Illinois Valley 9 to 8. The Eagles won on a four-run rally in the final canto. They went into the final turn at bat trailing 8 to 5. Illinois took the lead in the first inning and held it until the big Eagle surge. At one point the Cougars led 7 to 2. - Doug Johnson tripled for Eagle Point and Carl Christian and Charles Eccleston got two hits each. Youngsters under 12 years of age will be admitted free. Sponsors of the races are the Southern Oregon Boat club, the Western Speedboat association and the Medford 20-30 club. They suggest that residents of the valley come and make a fam ily picnic of the day. They also advise motorists to come early and avoid the rush. Bevos Drop Seal Game By 6-1 Edge San Francisco U.R) Long Bill Bradford won his second game of the week Saturday as he limited the Portland Beav ers to six hits in pitching the San Francisco Seals to a 6-1 vic tory in a Pacific Coast league game. The victory was the third for San Francisco in the five games played with the Beavers. They wind up the series today with a doubleheader. Bradford struck out three and walked four as he chalked up his second victory of the cam paign. He got good help in the way of two double plays. The lone run scored off him was un earned. The Seals went in front in the third inning when Ray Ham rick beat out an infield hit. He was sacrificed to second and scored on a single by Len Ratto. Ratto then scored later on an error. Two more runs came across the plate in the fourth on suc cessive doubles by Joe Grace, Bill McCawley and Herman Lewis, Another counted in the fifth on a single by Ratto and a double by Bob Thurman; and the final score came in the sev enth when Thurman singled, ad vanced to second on Eddie Ba- sinski's error and scored on Mc- Cawley's single. The lone Portland run came when Frankie Austin singled as Ratto erred on Joe Brovia's grounder. Austin then scored from second on Bob Conatster's single to center. , Viking Girl Baseball Player Shuns Diamond Portland U.PJ Portland State, formerly Vanport, will be with out its feminine second-sacker thisyear. (U.PJ The King Ranch's Marcador, ridden by jockey R. L. Baird, who lost both his stirrups at the half-way mark, won the $15,000 Oakland Handicap at Golden Gate fields Saturday. A long-shot in the betting who paid off $17.10 on a $2 ticket, Marcador whipped some of the West's best three-year-olds, in cluding Indian Land, the race favorite; and Betty Grable's Big Noise, both of whom finished out of the money. Time for the one-mile was 1:35 35. with Horsetrader-Ed second. Haltafire third and Dark- town fourth. The other horse in the field of seven was Copie H. Marcador was well placed all the way and followed the rail all through the race. Baird lost both his stirrups shortly after passing the half-mile pole, but hung on grimly to come ripping into the stretch. Horsetrader-Ed, .who was in front at the stretch, started, to bear out and Marcador came Action Delayed On ACE Program Tempe, Ariz. (U.PJ The Western Colleges association Saturday postponed action until the fall on a strengthened policy of athletic controls as establish ed by the American Council of Education. The decision was announced at a business meeting of the as sociation, which held its annual convention on the campus of Arizona State college here. The organization includes colleges and universities in California, Arizona and Nevada, as well as Hawaii. The executive committee of the association empowered presi dents of member schools to study the policy of the national group. That program would abolish spring football practice and post season games, as well as tighten other athletic regulations. The presidents are to report on their finds in the fall. U.E) Pitcher Bobby Slaybaugh has lost his left eye as result of an ac cident at the St Louis Cardin als' spring camp in St Peters burg, Fla., on March 24. The Cardinals announced that Slay baugVs eye was removed in an operation at Barnes Hospital in St, Louis. The southpaw pitcher was hit in the face by a batted ball and his cheek was crushed. He also set a new record in the 90-yard free-style Friday night Dick Lebedeff, San Jose State, cracked the record in the 100 yard backstroke in 1:08, com pared with the old mark of 1:08.6, held by Chet Keil of San Jose State. Lebedeff also set a record last night in the 200 yard bacstroke. Jay Flood, San Jose State won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:1.7 for another new mark, smashing the old record of 1:13.5. set by Don Feak, San Jose State. Flood won the 150- yard individual medley relay today, too. Stanford Tops Bears in CIBA League Contest Stanford, Calif. (U.R) Roger Osenbaugh pitched Stanford University to an 8 to 5 CIBA win over the University of Cali fornia Saturday with 14 strike outs which kept the Bears in the league cellar. Short stop Warren Goodrich paced the Indians at bat with four singles and one RBI in five times at the plate. Osenbaugh went all the way despite signs of wildness which in the first inning put two Cal men on base on walks that re sulted in two runs eventually. Stanford's big second inning scored four runs on two hits and two Bear errors. California has now lost three CIBA games in a row, against a 2 and 1 record for Stanford. "Little Mo" Wins In Tennis Match ! San Francisco U.R) Nation al champion Maureen Connolly, the 17-year-old star from San Diego, won the first two matches she played in the Bay Counties tennis tournament Saturday at the Olympic Country club. Miss Connolly trimmed Joan Ross-Dilley of England 6-1, 6-1; and then defeated Joan Mer ciadia of Modesto, Calif., 6-1, 6-2. In another important match. Dot Head of Alameda, Calif., defeated Anita Kanter, junior champion, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3. In the feature match of the men's division, Tom Brown of San Francisco won two matches as he turned back Ellis Slack, Long Beach and Menlo Park, 6-3, 6-2 and Nick Carter, San Francisco, 6-3, 8-6. Stanford, Calif. UJD Bob Thompson paced Stanford uni versity swimmers Saturday to a 67 to 17 victory over the San Diego naval training station. Thompson scored first in the 100 yard free style in :53.5 and the 220-yard free style in 2:17.6.
