A headquarters has been act up in the Jackson hotel, and volunteer workers are on hand throughout the day to distribute literature and to answer ques tions. ; ; ' . And a group of younger Re publicans, through their Youth for Eisenhower committee of Jackson county, are laying plans for an intensive one-week cam paign to register voters prefer ably Republican, although they will assist anyone to register. Ralph Seely, 204 Vancouver venue, is chairman of the coun ty youth committee, and is in charge of the registration drive. Baby Sitters, Drivars . Plans call for organization of a group of baby sitters for those who want to register but can't get away to do so because of children; organization of a reg istration transportation corps to take people to registration loca tions, and an information serv ice, telling anyone where, when and how they may register. The information service will be conducted in conjunction with the regular Eisenhower for President committee, in its Jackson hotel headquarters. Anyone interested in the work, Seely said, either as an of fice worker, babysitter or driver, is asked to leave his name at the headquarters, telephone 2-6093 or telephone Seely at his home. Volunteer Service Others who are staffing the office this week are Mrs. R. V. Rickard, Mrs. Elton Jackson, Mrs. Ray Larson, Mrs. M. P. Vogel, and the Rev. J. M. B. Gill. Mrs. Rickard and her hus band, a retired Army major gen eral, arrived in the valley re cently to visit their son, Tom, and his family at 403 ' Oak street. The couple are also plan ning to make their home here. General and Mrs. Rickard are long-time friends of General and Mrs. Dwight D. Eisenhower, and though Mrs. Rickard was retl cent about bringing her friend' ship with the Eisenhowers into politics, she did say she is en thusiastic about ,vIke's" possible candidacy. She has never participated in an election campaign before, she said, but she added that she is anxious to speak to valley res idents about the Eisenhowers, and perhaps give an insight into what she and General Rickard believes are Eisenhower's quali fications for the presidency. 15-Cent Cash' Fare Urged iir Portland Portland (U.R) A 13-cent cash fare was recommended Thursday to the Portland City council as a cure to the financial ills of the Portland Traction com pany by an advisory committee studying the city's transporta tion problems. The recommendation included an eight-cent student fare and a $2.40 weekly pass. The committee will recom mend the new fare structure at a public meeting scheduled for Fri day. Fulton Y. Magill, Tacoma rate expert, said the proposed fares would yield a net of approxi mately $483,604.. He said the new net income would be sufficient for the firm to enter into ne gotiations with the AFL street carmen's union and still permit the company to make a fair re turn of its investment. Streetcarmen have set April 7 as the deadline for a strike to back up i demands for higher wages and other benefits. The valuation of the 88 acres under fence was reduced from $1,100 to $125 an acre. The firm's personal property was re duced $132,156, while equip ment was slashed $457,485; buildings, $240,430, and land $85,0001 - The cut in the assessed valua tion gave a total tax reduction of $43,687.04. Sam Stewart, an attorney at tached to the tax commission, said "certain factors" not taken into consideration when the original personal property ap praisal was made, led to the reduction. , - - ... w .... Mother Had Premonition Son's Plane Would Crash Spokane U.R) A mother whose premonition of disaster caused her to fear for the safety of her Alaska-bound son took the news calmly Thursday that he had been injured and his com panion killed in the crash of their-small light plane. Dave Young, whose home was in Lewiston, Ida., was killed when the two-seater crashed against a hillside seven miles north of Council, Ida., Wednes day night: Good Chance To Survive . -Pilot Baden (Buzz) Crawford, 19-y ear-old, Seattle . aircraft worker, suffered head injuries and cuts on his face and legs, but a physician said his chances of surviving were good. .
