(U.R) Casey Stengel thinks his new York Yankees are going to do it again. He's fooled the experts three years in a row by winning the American league pennant and the world series and "1952 is going to be the same." "I know the Indians probably will be favored, but don't forget the Red Sox were favored the last three years and we wound up on top. I know we are going to do it again." Figured Tough While most rival managers agree that Cleveland should win, they concede the Yankees are going to be tough to beat. As Manager Jimmy Dykes of the Athletics puts ?t: "Don't ever sell the Yankees short. They always come up with what they need. What they need for the com ing season is a new third base man and a new center fielder and it looks like Stengel will come up with both. He is not worried over what most experts call "my first base problem.' Third Best "I have the third best first baseman in the league in Joe Collins, and I have Johnny Mize and Johnny Hopp back of him, Stengel said. "And that doesn't take into account Don Bollweg and Kal Segrist, either of whom could make . the club. So let mi tell you I'm not worried about first base. Stengel rates Ferris Fain of the Athletics and Eddie Robin son of the White Sox as the "only first baseman in the league better than my man Collins. He is convinced that rookie Andy Carey, who hit .288 at Kansas City last year, is going to solve his third base problem. That became a problem when Gerry Coleman was ordered to return to duty in the Marines and Bobby Brown stood by for a call to the Army Medical corps. - Stengel doesn't expect either one around for the com ing season. Infialders Listed ' As the infield shapes up now, it will be Collins on first, Gil McDougald at second, Phil Riz xuto at short , and Carey , at "third. . Cut on Head During Ball Game Melvin Amaro 15, son of Mrs. Isabel Amaro, 931 South Central avenue, was treated at Sacred Heart hospital yesterday evening for a deep scalp cut suffered when he was hit on the head with a bat during a baseball game. Conger-Morris ambulance men took him to the hospital from Phoenix, where the game, be tween St. Mary's school team on which he was catcher, and the Phoenix team, was being played Three stitches were required to close the cut. He was released to go home after treatment. The accident ended the ballgame in the fourth inning. Soldier Faces Trial For Alleged Rape Everett (U.R) S-Sgt. John McGowan, 21, Thursday faced trial for the alleged rape of a young mother and the slugging of her husband Tuesday. McGowan, an airman stationed at nearby Paine Field, Wednes day was charged with rape and second degree assault in con nection with the attack. Snohom ish county Superior Judge Tom Stiger continued the arraignment and appointed James Tynan as McGowan s attorney. McGowan was apprehended after Benita and Denzil Kath man identified the airman as the assailant. r Mail Goes Through After Two-Year Delay Anacortes, Wash.
