Sutton, Pal Of Robbery 'New York (UJ! An all-male Jury which had debated through out the night filed into the box at dawn Tuesday' and pro nounced Willie (the Actor) Sut ton and his (unman pal, Thomas (Mad Dog) Kling. guilty of rob bing a Queens county bank of $63,942 two years ago. " The verdict for Sutton meant little as far as years in the peni tentiary go. It would add a maxi mum of 30 years to the 100 or more he already faces in unex pired terms on other robbery charges. . Defendants Told To Rise' As the jury filled the box, the defendants were told to rise and face the standing men. Jury foreman Donald Maloney, a landscape architect, pronounced the verdict: "Sutton and 'Kling guilty as charged." That meant the jury had de cided . both defendants . were guilty on four counts. The maxi mum penalty . with sentences running concurrently on all four counts would be 30 years. How ever, that could be doubled if the state, prior to sentencing, files an information with the court proving the defendants are multiple felony offenders. Tipster Slain Sutton was arrested Feb. 18 when the alertness of a 24-year-old clothing salesman led police to him. Nineteen days later, the salesman, Arnold Schuster, was shot dead a few doors from his home. In past years the transportation tax on Puget Sound ferry traffic has amounted to between $250,- 000 and $300,000 a year. This tax and the three per cent tax on automobiles and freight trans ported by ferries were discon tinued last midnight. The state's action was expect ed to lead to a court, test over whether the federal government can extend its transportation tax to the state-owned ferry system. Disease List Down Sharply This Week The number of communicable disease cases reported in Jackson county dropped off sharply last week, according to the weekly listing issi3d by the county health officer x Influenza, which has totaled more than 100 cases for several weeks, dropped to 65 cas.es, 46 of them in Medford, 4 in Jackson ville, 0 in Ashland,' 5 in Rogue River and.l in Central Point. -' Three cases of chicken pox were reported, one each from Jacksonville, Phoenix and Med ford, and Medford had one case of pneumonia and one case of diphtheria. ' The diphtheria case was con tracted outside the county, and the patient is now in hospital isolation. It is the first true diphheria case in Jackson county since the epidemic which ended in October, 1949. Rogue. River Purchase of two lots as a site for a new city hall was authorized at a special meet'ng of the Rogue River city council on March 26. It was stated at .the meeting that the two lots have a frontage of 100 feet -on Broadway street and are approximately 150 feet long, excepting 16 feet on the west end which, was . reserved for an alley. Medicine Hat Floods Leave 1,000 Homeless Medicine Hat, Alta. (U.R) - Floods caused by a spring that already has left 1,000 persons homeless showed no sign of eas ing Tuesday. Central 1 all-time records this year, Frost Oregon areas Tuesday faced the threat of new floods from record breaking snows in the Ochoco mountains, according to W. T. Frost, Medford, snow survey leader in Oregon for the Soil Conservation service. Frost said at the 17th annual water forecast committee meet ing here yesterday that the snow in the Deschutes and Crooked river basins also assures abun dant water supplies in the area for 1952. The pilot, Ensign Kenneth A. Schechter, was flying a mission over North Korea recently when enemy ground fire tore the can opy off his plane and pulled skin from his face. "I'm Dlind," he called into his radio, "someone tell me where I am." Lt. (jg) Howard Thayer, a fel low pilot on the same flight, spotted Schechter's plane. "If you're the one, wiggle your wings," Thayer said through his microphone. Schech ter wiggled his wings. Then Thayer began giving or ders to Schechter, first instruct ing him to jettison his bomb load. Then he turned him to- Automobile Firebug Hunted in Portland Portland (U.R) Police inten sified their hunt Tuesday for one or more firebugs after blazes were touched off in seven more automobiles in a little more than an hour Monday night. It brought to 12 the number of cars that have been set afire on the west side here in a little over a week, police said. Monday night's blazes gutted four cars and caused extensive damage to front seat qf three others. Each fire apparently started m the driver s seat or on me floor under the dash. Cars in each case probably had been left unlocked, firemen said. The cuckoo, which places its eggs in the nests of other and smaller birds, does it through necessity. Frost said snow survey meas urements since the Prineville flood last week revealed that snow cover is now 165 per cent of average. Hold her steady, fella. Throttle back more. Easy boy, easy that's it. 1'ou're on the ground." Schechter landed on the belly of his plane because he could not find the control to let the wheels down. He skidded to a safe stop. Schechter was treated for multiple lacerations about the face and body but otherwise was uninjured. Tuesday. ACDC Tractor Crushes Rogue River Man Rogue River Clint Hawkins Jr., was seriously injured Mon day morning when the tractor he was driving hit a chuck hole on the East Evans road and over turned crushing him beneath it Hawkins was rushed to the Jose phine General hospital in Grants Pass by ambulance. His injuries are reported to be a compressed vertebra, bruised shoulder and cut cheek and eye. The accident occurred while Hawkins was taking the tractor to the Willis Stiehl plant on Pine street. Witnesses stated that after the tractor hit the chuck hole Haw kins was unable to steer lt into the driveway of the plant, in stead it ran into the bank and overturned.
