Boy, 6, Brings Outside World To Mother, Father Washington UJ5 Six-year-Id Tommy Beierle has the un usual task of being bis parents' link with the outside world. He is the voice and ears for his mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Ferdinand Beierle. They can neither speak nor hear. They talk in sign language and before Tommy's birth had a difficult time communicating with neigh bors. When Tommy was born his parents began teaching him sign language. They did not know he had normal speech and hearing faculties. When Tommy was two he heard a neighbor's radio and began imitating the sounds. His parents became aware that he was making noises and sent him to a play school, where he learned to speak like the other children. Now Tommy can communicate both in sign language and by regular speech. He acts as the family interpreter. He orders the groceries, does the talking when there are other chores, and inter prets when friends visit his fam ily at Temple Trailer Village, Va. Tommy also translates for the visiting nurse who helps Mrs. Beierle with his infant sister, Diane. When Diane cries Tommy tells his mother. Aside from being the family translator, Tommy lives a normal first-grader's life. He tells his mother what happens in school and reads his homework with her help. Tommy also assists around the house while his father works as a machinist at the naval gun factory. He helps set the table, make his bed, and holds a dustpan for his mother. PRICES HIGHER NOW Anadarko, Okla. (U.R) Sav ing $50,000 by not building a county courthouse in the de pression days of the mid-1930's is proving to be poor economy for Caddo county commissioners. Contractors estimated the same building will now cost $900,000. The nation today needs work ers. Easter Seals train crippled adults to participate in the de fense effort. Phoenix Police Chht , Warm of Dog Law Phoenix Chief of Police M. C. Fisher today reminded Phoe nix dog owners that dogs must not be allowed to run loose be tween April 1 and August 1. He said the city ordinance on the matter will be strictly enforc ed and that lines will be levied for violations. Party for Teachers Set Tuesday Evening The annual Oregon Education association's teachers' party, to be held at the Medford high school tomorrow, will begin with a buffet supper in the school cafeteria at 7 p.m., It was an nounced today. In addition to other entertain ment, square dance exhibitions will be given under the direction of Mrs. Minnie Robertson in the boys' gym after the carnival pro gram, directed by Bernard Windt, director of music in Ash land schools. There will be no charge for either the supper or the program, according to Mrs.. Kathryn Stan cliffe, chairman. All schools are asked to telephone 2-4424 to tell committeemen the number of teachers and guests planning to attend. Ashland Man Fined For Drunken Driving Wiley Durrell Crenshaw, 156 Fifth street, Ashland, was fined $250 plus $5 costs in district court today after he pleaded guilty to a charge of driving a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicating liquor. Judge'Rawles Moore also sen tenced Crenshaw to 60 days in the county jail on the same of fense, but suspended the sen tence upon payment of the fine and pending good behavior. Crenshaw was committed to the county jail in lieu of payment of the fine, according to district court records. The National Society for Crip pled Children and Adults, spon sor of the Easter Seal campaign, is one of the oldest voluntary agencies in America, with a his tory of 30 years of continuous service. Hew Sexton Radio lower Completed The 'new radio tower on the top of Sexton mountain, north of Grants Pass, was completed Sun day, it was reported today. The tower will be operated by Sexton Forest Industries Com munications, a Josephine county group of lumbermen associated with the Southern Oregon Con servation and Tree Farm asso ciation. The radio v network in that area will serve a land sta tion in Grants Pass and a group of mobile units owned by lum bermen, it is similar to the net work operated here by SOCTFA. Final tests will be conducted Tuesday and Wednesday, and if all goes wen, the system will go into full operation Wednesday. according to L. L. Simpson, secretary-manager ana forester for SOCTFA.
