(International) Tornado Baseballers Win Over Cavemen 9-1 Medford high school's base ball team Friday chalked up victory in its first interscholastic tussle of the season and turned Its attention to a practice fray, with Southern Oregon college scheduled Monday at Ashland. The Black Tornado diamond contingent lashed Grants Pass 9 to 1 here Friday in a practice game featured by a four-run homer by Terry Maddox. Medford took command its first turn at bat. Dennis Conner got the Medford three-run first inning surge underway with a single. He stole second and went to third on an error. Ned Land ers singled Conner home and got to third on Maddox safety. Landers scored after Derald Wooton flied out. Then Terry Sherwood singled, permitting Maddox to tally. Homtr Slag Set Tornado batters went down in order in the second stanza. In the third Dick Atterbury led off with a single and Conner walked. Ned Landers moved the base runners ahead with a sacrifice bunt and was safe on an error at first base on the play. That set the stage for Maddox who whammed the ball through cen terfield for the roundtripper. Another Medford run crossed in the third. Sherwood got to first base when Norm Hedge peth. Grants Pass catcher, muf fed a third strike pitch. He got to second on another error and gained third base when Max Lindley's rap was bungled. Sher wood scored as Ted Landers grounded out. The final Medford marker was tallied in the fourth frame. Con ner got on the base paths on an error, stole second and went to third base on a passed ball. Ned Landers sacrificed to score Con ner. Grants Pass managed its lone run in the fifth. Dick Pepper led off with a single. He was forced at second and Bradley Lucas was safe at first base on the force play. Dick Wooton, Med ford catcher, overthrew second, permitting Lucas to go to third. Keith Barker went in to run for Lucas. Cliff Driskell walked and Williams struck out. Hedge peth drove Barker across the plate with a single. Derald Wooton hurled three innings for Medford, holding Grants Pass hitless, fanning six batters and walking two men. Officers will be elected on that date. Application for charter will be sent to the National Rifle association following the meet ing. All members joining before April 8 will be, charter members. U.R) Two steals to home plate were fea tures of a big four-run third in ning Friday for San Jose State college as the Spartans defeated the University of Oregon 6-3 to even a two-game baseball series. Catcher Xavier Delbuono and centerfielder Joe Bonfiglio both stole home on the tag ends of double steals. Freshman George Shaw, who starred in Oregon's 14-inning vic tory Thursday, was forced to leave the game when he hurt his knee sliding into second base. ISM Walcotr, Charles To Sign Monday Philadelphia (U.R) Heavy weight Champion Jersey Joe Walcott after unsuccessful nego tiations for a bout with Harry (Kid) Matthews or Rocky Marci aoo, was ready Saturday to give Ezzard Charles his long-delayed return shot at the title. Promoter Herman Taylor an nounced that the 38-year-old Walcott and the 30-yearold Charles will sign next Monday for a June title fight at Philadel phia's Municipal stadium. Taylor withheld the actual date of the bout until the formal sighing at City Hall headquar ters of the Police Athletic league, which will benefit from the gate receipts.
