Much St, ltSl Coaches Give Opinions on New Rules Seattle U.PJ Streamlining of the national basketball .rule hnoV to cive the losing team a better break in the dying mo ments of a game was eyed criti cally Friday by one of two col lege coaches who first tried out the new rulings. - Coach Bob Feerick, whose Santa Clara Broncos lost the NCAA consolation game to Illi nois Wednesday night, said he thmipM his team was hampered by the new rules. The changes adopted by the national Dasnei ball rules committee of the Unit ed States and Canada and tried out in the Santa Clara-Illinois came were: 1. A player who is fouled must take his foul shots. His team may not elect to take the ball out of bounds in order to assure retain ing possession as under the old ruling. Second Shot 2. A player who receives one free throw and misses may shoot a second time. 3. A player fouled in the last three minutes of the game auto matically receives two free throws. Bruce Drake, University of Oklahoma coach and chairman of the rules committee, tabbed the first change as the most im portant as it would prevent stalling. Increase Stalling However, Feerick, whose team began a "freeze" with fouj min utes to go and the score tied 5&-58, said the rule would in crease stalling. He said: "This way a team knows it will get two shots as in rule three on a foul in the last three minutes. Naturally, a team will take a shot from the field if it gets a chance, but the overall effect will be to bring about more, instead of less stalling WADE SHOWS WELL Miami (U.R) The Brooklyn Dodgers, who have been search ing frantically for a new Don Newcombe," hoped Friday that instead they may have discov ered a "new Whitlow Wyatt" in 30-year-old Ben Wade. (lnttrnational) Sectional Rifle Tourney Here This Week-End Approximately 75 participants are expected here this. week-end for the sectional indoor small bore rifle tournament to be held by the Medford Rifle club. Shooting will be from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Merrick's range, 112 North Riverside ave nue. Club officials yesterday after noon reported 53 advance en tries. Participants are expected from as far north as Salem. Oth ers will be coming from northern California. Individual Matches There will be four individual matches fired, 20 shots each, prone, sitting, kneeling and standing. One match will be the aggregate score for all four posi tions and an international aggre gate will be figured from the sit ting, kneeling and standing scores. A four-man team match is scheduled with the Salem-Su-blimity combined team coming to defend its title. A large delegation is expected from Klamath county. Tourney officials include Roy Hewitt, executive officer and Vern Decker, statistica! officer Haas Brothers sporting goods store reportedly has donated an additional trophy for the expert class. Many Frosh On Raider Track Squad Ashland Two former Med ford high school athletes are members of the Southern Ore gon college track squad this spring, according to Coach Dan Bulkley. Practice started .this week in preparation for the first meet on April 19. The squad is dominated in numbers by freshmen, Bulkley said, with many former high school thinclads expected to bol ster SOC hopes. The coach said a team of about 30 men is ex pected to be ready to take part in home meets this spring. In the sprints, Les Cingcade, Oakland, and Bill Kester, Cave Junction, have shown promise. George Johnson, Coquille, and Leroy Springer, Hood River, are top contenders for the hurdle events. Middle distances will be han dled by Bruce Friend and Don Briggs, both former Grants Pass runners, and Carrel Cheshire, Cheshire. The distance events ap pear to be the weakest event with Giles Harnden, Medford, the only man trying out for those events. Purcell en Team Glen Nelson, Ashland, is ex pected to show well in the Jumps and Springer has also had pre vious experience in these events. The field events will be well covered. Bulkley said. Jerry Les lie, Ashland is top man in the lavclin with Stan Purcell, Med ford, and Springer also expe rienced. Discus and shotput will be handled by Homer Waters, Yoncalla, and Ted Gehrman, Klamath Falls. The Red Raiders will open their season against Oregon Technical institute and Shasta college at Ashland on April 19. Other meets scheduled include one with Oregon College of Edu cation at Monmouth April 26, a triangle meet with Chico State and Humboldt State at Chico May 5, Humboldt, OTI and Shas ta here on May 10 and the Far Western conference meet at Chico May 17. IB Tornado Track Team Faces Pels Saturday First indication of how the Medford high school track team, defending state champ, stacks up in its own district will be given Saturday. The Black Tornado thinclads will take on Klamath Falls in a dual meet Klamath, year after year, fur nishes Medford its major com petition in this district. Last year the Tornado beat out the Pels in a dual test, the district meet and the 20-30 club invita tional at Klamath Falls. The Pelicans nipped Medford 58 13 to 58 in the Hayward relays at Eugene. At the request of the visiting cindermen, the meet Saturday will commence at 2 p.m.. one half hour later than originally planned. The tussle is scheduled for completion in less than two hours. There will be 14 events. Events Listed Events to get underway at 2 p.m. are the high jump, shot put and pole vault. Time of other events is 70-yard high hurdles, and discus, 2:15 p.m.; 100-yard dash, 2:25 p.m.; mile and broad jump, 2:35 p.m.; 330-yard dash and Javelin, 2:45 p.m.; 110-yard low hurdles, 2:55 p.m.; 880-yard run, 3:05 p.m.; 440-yard relay. 3:15 p.m.; 880-yard relay, 3:30 p.m. Coach Bob Newland is build ing this year's Medford squad around 16 lettermen and pos sibly 35 boys may carry Tornado colors in the Saturday clash. Races will finish in front of the new grandstand on the east side of the senior high stadium and spectators are asked to en ter and remain on that side of the oval. . Dick Finch will be starter for the races. NOSE BROKE Tucson. Ariz. (U.R) Short stop Ray Boone of the Cleveland Indians will be sidelined for a few days with a broken nose. Boone suffered the injury in Wednesday's exhibition game when a throw from the outfield took a bad hop. 1 Ducks Down Spartan Nine San Jose, Calif. (U.R) Uni versity of Oregon and San Jose State baseball teams were to meet again Friday after the Oregonians edged the Spartans in a 14-inning game here Thursday. It was the first Webfoot vic tory for a pre-season California roadtrip. Stan Aune pitched one-hit ball for Oregon during the last 61,! innings and George Shaw, freshmen centerfielder, scored the winning run in the 14th in ning when he came home from third on a long fly by freshman catcher Ron Bottler. Shaw had three hits in five times at bat. Pilgrimage Fund Tussle Tonight Two independent basketball quints, one from Medford and the other from Grants Pass col lide at 8:15 p.m. today at the junior high and. proceeds will go to the Oddfellows' United Nations pilgrimage fund. Crazy Swayze, champ of the Medford circuit, will oppose Fleischman Lumber company. A 7:15 p.m. prelim is planned with Elk-Trail and Lone Pine playing. The Oddfellows plan to send a boy and girl from Jackson and Josephine counties to the United Nations headquarters. Funds are being raised through various projects. PHTLLIE PLATER FINED .. DOG-AT-LOOSE LAW City police reminded Medford residents today tat a $25 fine will be levied on persons allow ing female dogs to run loose after April 1. The ordinance con cerning dog control is only in ef fect inside the city limits of Med ford, they stated. No county en forcement program is, in effect, county officials said.
