March St. 1S53 SO "s y 4 a RAINING TROOPERS Operation Long Horn at Ft Hood, Tex., got under way as 3000 paratroopers bit the silk is 10 minutes. One trooper was killed when bis 'chute failed to open. Thirty-nine others were injured and a jeep and a 105-mm. howitzer were shat tered. The heavy equipment either parted from their lines or the parachutes failed to open. A Nichols? Well, there is such a critter and the Smith sonian Institute can prove it. It has a couple on display in alco hol. That won derful place has about ev erything, run ning a delight ful gamut from dinosaurs to whales to rare Harmon Micbola 0id ,pjanos and zithers to a pair of 14th century wooden Dutch shoes. Not to men tion Col. Charles A. Lindbergh's plane, "The Spirit of St Louis." The quacking frogs are the latest curiosity. According to Smithsonian of ficials the species is hitherto un described and the folks there are in a tizzy trying to name the dis covery. As of now they are nick-named "Quacky" or just plain "duck frogs" but Dr. Doris M. Cochran, associate curator of reptiles and amphibians in the U.S. national museum, is. busy suggesting some thing more dignified and, more important, more scientific. Names Proposed She proposes Hyla Similis, and since she doesn't expect too much competition in the contest over a name, Hyla Similis it likely will become.. Dr. Cochran describes the spe cies as a "gregarious little frog found particularly in the out skirts of Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. It may have a larger range." The curator has been studying frogs and amphibians for many years. About this new one, 6he says in the journal of the Wash ington Academy of Sciences: "This new frog has the habit of swarming on one occasion hundreds were found on a single tree. "The voice of the adult male is a high-pitched 'crack-crack-crack, sounding something like that of a duck. Breeding takes place in March and April. The tadpoles transform very rapidly. taking only 20 or 30 days to change into frogs, but they are rather delicate as they die from the effects of too much sun if the water in which they live is not deep enough. Tendency Toward Dark Dr. Cochran goes on to de scribe the frog. She says it has a tendency . toward dark, elon gated spots. It differs in its sig nificantly lower average length of head, femur, tibia, and foot, nnd in the absence of "clear-cut dorsolateral stripes, and in the usually more finally spotted fe mur tibia and its smaller size. I'll take the doctor's word for all, but Hyla Similis looked like the lily pad variety of frog to me. The tongue is about three fifths as wide as the mouth which is supposed to be some kind of advantage in the business of licking in unwary flies and other tidbits of frog food. Quack Attracts Attention However, the duck-frog Is not interested in food when it quacks the quack being used mostly to attract the attention of lady duck-frogs. N In the living species, Dr. Coch ran says, the coloring is like this: the posterior femur is a chrome yellow with brown trimming. The throat is citron-yellow; the belly is sulphur-yellow, in the center and chrome-yellow toward the sides; the dorsum' is clay col ored in the center with drab stripe. There you have the quacking frog. The entire crew of the 7,133 ton Champlain, just back from Gydnia, Poland with a cargo of cement, quit their jobs when the vessel docked here. The captain shot himself at sea two days ago. Forest Service Pacific northwest re gional office In Portland. The fiscal year began July 1, 1951. Receipts for the Siskiyou Na tional forest, with headquarters in Grants Pass, for the same pe riod, were $514,888, they stated. Receipts for all national for ests in Oregon and Washington climbed to $21,250,000 during the eight-month period, an in crease of almost $4,750,000 over the same period of the previous year. Willamette Tops Topping the 19 national forests in the region is the Willamette, with headquarters in Eugene, which collected $3,911,923. an increase of nearly $2,000,000 over the same period last fiscal year. Twenty-five per cent of na tional forest receipts is returned to the counties in which the for ests lie and is used for schools and roads. HERE'S another one for you to chew on: If the United States govern ment were to CONFISCATE all taxable income earned by indi viduals in excess of $10,000 a year, the additional tax revenue would amount to only 3.1 billion dollars. This would be enough to run the federal government for ONLY TWO WEEKS under the proposed Truman 85.4 billion dollar budget So you see, it's absurd for any body to think that in these days of fantastic spending the govern ment can be financed by soaking the rich. ' If we're to pay our bills, EVERYBODY has to be soaked. In these fatal days of late March, 1952, 1 think we'll all agree that everybody IS being soaked. MAYBE I'd better explain that crack about the Ides of March. Let's quote Plutarch on it: "Furthermore, there was a certain soothsayer that had giv-' en Caesar warning long time afore to take heed of the day of the Ides of March (which is the 15th of the month), for on that day he should be in great dan ger. That day being come, Cae; sar going into the senate-house and speaking merrily unto the soothsayer told him: 'The Ides of March be come.? "So they be," softly answered the sooth sayer, "but yet are they not passed. THE soothsayea's warning con cerned the stabbing to death of Caesar by Brutus, which en sued later. B. Tucker, Jackson county extension agent Growers should be sure that seed they Intend to plant is elig ible for certification. In some rrop varieties, only certain classes of certified seed may be planted to produce certified seed. Tucker states. Most crops certified are out standing for certain qualities such as leafiness, disease resist ance, seed production or other desirable characteristics, accord ing to the county agent. Supe rior features of many crops gradually become lost as seed is planted back time after time, be says. "Start Over" Plan Used To make sure such varieties remain true, a program of "start ing over' with the parent strain has been set up. This system is known as generation sequence. Most crops certified in Oregon are now under this plan, Tucker says. There are four classes of certified seed. They are breed ers, foundation, registered and certified. Breeders seed is the initial source of true stock and is usu ally maintained by experiment stations. Growers who plant breeders seed then harvest foun dation seed. Foundation seed produces registered seed and registered seed then produces certified seed which is tagged but is not eligible to plant again for certification. Continuous Process A continuous process of start ing over from breeders seed is maintained in this way, the county agent says. Certified seed must be used for forage produc tion or uncertified seed produc tion. This limit on the number of times seed may be increased as sures that the variety of crop re mains true, Tucker states. Bluegrass, bromegrass, rainier red fescue, taulatin outgrass, or chard grass, timothy wheatgrass. nomad and ranger alfalfa, red clover, crimson clover, lotus and corn come under the restricted generation seed plan. Tucker points out Ladino clover, Wil lamette vetch, bentgrass and some other crops are not under the generation system. Growers interested in certified seed production should make sure the seed they intend to plant is eligible for certifica tion. Tucker states. They may check with the Jackson county extension office in the county courthouse, where certification rules and application blanks are available. THROUGH CHIMISTRY Railroad Freight- Car Supply in Northwest Seen Same as in 1951 Portland (U.F0 The supply of railroad freight cars in the Pa cific Northwest should not be materially worse this year than in 1951, according to Defense Transport Administrator James K. Knudson. Depends on Materials Speaking before the 41st an nual stockholders' meeting of the West Coast Lumbermen's association here Thursday, Knud son said any improvement in the car supply would depend on al lotments of critical materials. He said he hoped plywood boxcars would prove feasible so that the nation's shipperes would not con tinue to suffer from short steel supplies. The administrator told the lumbermen that, during 1951, the principal railroads serving the Pacific Northwest installed 9,661 new freight cars. The new cars exceeded retirements by 4,468, he said, and brought the ownership of the roads at the end of the year to 240,322 cars. Dalles Dam Favored Knudson also urged mainten ance of the intercoastal shipping fleet as a competitor and as a supplement to overland trans port. And he predicted that a dam on the Columbia at The Dalles would eventually open the bottlenecks which slow barge hauling on the river and boost barge operating costs.
