Society and Clubs Miss Martha Shull To Speak Saturday, For Student Meeting Keynote speaker at the Ash land Conference for Young Women to be held Saturday will be Miss Martha Shull, Portland, it was announced today by Mrs. C. B. Collins, president of the Medford branch, American Asso ciation of University Women. With 'Mrs. Justin Smith, Med ford, Miss Shull will help sum marize topics discussed by the 200 girls In attendance at group sessions. Miss Shull is one of the out standing youth leaders of the state, Mrs. Collins states, and is extremely interested in the meeting planned on the South ern Oregon college campus. She is past president of the Oregon Education association, a mem ber of the National Education association executive board and a member of the Portland AAUW branch. . High school girls from south ern Oregon and northern Cali fornia will register at the col lege library from 8:30 to 9:30 a. m. Saturday and will meet in Churchill hall auditorium for welcoming and general instruc tions at 9:30 a. m. They will adjourn to 11 different discus sion groups for the remainder of the morning and will be served luncheon in Susanne Homes hall at 12:45. Following an early afternoon social hour, and tours of the campus, the group will reassem ble for summation of decisions reached in smaller groups. Prob lems of family life, employment, personal habits and spiritual values will be evaluated. The conference will conclude with recreation in Memorial Court followed by a tea to be served by the Ashland AAUW branch. Unit Meets, Lone Pine Extension unit met March 20 at the home of Mrs. C. C. Hoover. Twenty-three mem bers and two visitors were pres ent to hear C. B. Cordy, county agent, talk on "Home Gardening." Grants Pass Delegation Visits Medford Lodge; To Give Dinner in May A delegation from Grants Pass canton, Patriarchs Militant, and the auxiliary visited a meet ing of Siskiyou canton and aux iliary Friday night in the Med ford I OOF halL The visiting delegation in cluded Brig. Gen. E. C. Abbey and Mrs. Abbey, Major E. M. Abel, Mr. and Mrs. Roy H. Wright, Mr. and Mrs. William Klatt and Martin Johnson. Vera Kight, captain of Siski you canton, and Mrs. Kight, aux iliary president, conducted the meetings. Reports were made on a visit Siskiyou canton and auxiliary made to a meeting of the Central Point Rebekah lodge. An invitation to visit the Jacksonville lodge was accepted. The Medford auxiliary elected delegates to the annual grand lodge session, naming Mrs. Lyn Cram and Mrs. Carrie Milnes. Plans were made for a dinner Saturday, May 3. Mrs. O. S Walden was- named chairman and she will be assisted by Mrs. Lewis Thompson, Mrs. A. H. Gregory and Mrs. A. H. Hansen. A covered dish supper pre ceded last Friday's meeting, with Mrs. W. H. Dyer, Mrs. Rosa Young and Mrs. Fred Daugherty in charge. Spring flowers dec orated the tables. Baptist Class Plans Social Meeting Friday WC Sunday school class of First Baptist church will hold a social meeting Friday, March 28, at 7:45 p. m., in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Carter, South Pacific highway. Practice Announced Jacksonville Officers of Ad arel chapter are asked to meet at the Masonic temple in Ash land, Sunday, March 30, at 2 p. m., to practice in preparation for the district meeting. Cour tesy girls are to assemble at 3 p. m. for practice. Plan Entertainment For Dinner, Dance . Of YMCA Saturday A dance exhibition, roving musicians and other entertain ment is planned for the YMCA smorgasbord dinner Saturday, March 29. The event is open to the general .public and for those who square dance as well as those who do not, the committee states. The dance exhibition to be given during intermission will be by Joe Hausler of Central Point and wilLJnclude Russian and other Euroan folk dances. A number of the valley's best known callers, as well as several new callers, are to be on the program, with Gordon Kershaw in charge. Dancing is to be in the gymnasium to accommodate the expected audience. A variety of both American and Swedish dishes is being of fered at the dinner, the cost of which includes the dance or those who wish to watch. A mu sic program is planned for those who do not dance, and for the dinner hours. . The event will benefit the YMCA world service fund which maintains orphanages and other youth work abroad. - Medford Bridge Club Holds Weekly Session Medford Duplicate Bridge club held the weekly session Tuesday night at the Medford hotel. Holding top score for the north-south playing position were Mrs. Frank R Baker and Mrs. George Dean, who scored 127 points. Second for that posi tion went to B. L. Sanderson and Bill Kennedy with 121 points. and third to Mrs. Herbert Seitz and Mrs. Paul Hatton, 120 points. Fourth was wop by Jack Barr and William F., Isaacs with 117 points. Mrs. Glenn Fabrick and Mrs. B. B. Hughes took first place in the east-west position with 130Vi points. Mrs. AF. Stennett and her partner, Vlrs. Sanderson, took second with 129V4 and in third place were Al Gilhousen and Frank Baker with 12712 points. Miss Isobel Stuart and her partner, Dr. S. Ralph Dippel, were in fourth place with 126. Society to Sponsor Prayer Day Friday St Peter's Lutheran ladies' Aid society will sponsor a day of prayer Friday, March 28. The program of prayer, meditation and warship will begin at 10:15 a. m. It is stated that those inter ested may "come when they can and go when they must." 4 Daughters Will Honor Mrs. Violet Gunderson Mrs. Violet Gunderson, Port land, will be guest of honor at a meeting of Elta Deuel Hubbs tent, Daughters of Union Veter ans, to be held Friday, March 28, at the home of Mrs. Fred Daugherty, Kings highway. A potluck dinner at 6:30 p. m. will precede the meeting and members are asked to take table service- Lodge. To Meet Pocahontas lodge will meet Friday, March 28, at 8 p. m., in Redman . hall. Past chiefs will be in the stations, with Mrs. Louise Southerland acting as Pocahontas, Mrs. George Watson as prophetess, . Mrs. Roy Stoy, Wenonah, and Charles Dooms, Powhatan. Jones, 23-year-old Louisiana Negro accused of strangling Howard F. Haling last fall. The first degree murder trial opened in Whatcom county Su perior Court Wednesday, when Defense Attorney David Rhea acknowledged Jones "did throt tle" the 57-year-old station master at Sumas, Wash. . "Jones throttled Haling in a struggle that followed the de fendant's refusal to perpetrate a felony," Rhea said in his opening statement "After the struggle, Jones realized he had gone too far." Cm Man Tribune Want Ada Eugene Plane Crash Fatal to Two Men Eugene (U.fD Two men. were killed late Wednesday when a two-place Aeronca Champion plane crashed in Amazon marsh near here. y- Donald E. Breeden, 26. of Eugene, a passenger in the plane, was -killed instantly. . The pilot of the craft Robert Lyon, about 30, also of Eugene, died an hour later. Witnesses said the plane had just taken off from the Bev's Flying Service field when it ap peared to stall or spin-in and crash. Air traffic in Germany Is in creasing rapidly, the number of air passengers rising 35 per cent in the third quarter of last year, totaling 902,000.
